The Phoenix Outlaws were ranked 28th in the 35 team ranking and were in the "F" pool play. In the round-robin series, the Outlaws defeated the four other teams for a perfect four and zero standing to advance to the playoff round. The teams they defeated were the Elora Brewers, Marshall Lightning from Michigan, Stittsville 56ers, and the Sydney Cardinals from Nova Scotia. The first game of the playoffs was against the Bakersfield, Lumberkings from California, ranked ninth in the tournament. It was a really great game with the with a guest book and a picture frame which people autographed. Their daughter, Margie, had prepared a slide presentation with many pictures of Bob and Ruth throughout their younger years, their marriage, their children, grandchildren and various trips they have taken. Just before lunch break Robert called his parents to the front. He then announced_ that a talented young lady and a family friend, Brittany Haines, would sing What a Wonderful World. After Robert thanked Brittany for sharing their talent, Ruth then said a few words illustrating that a marriage is like a garden — ever changing. There wasn't e-mail 40 years ago so they communicated by - letter. Ruth was in Toronto and Bob was in this area. A stamp cost five Phoenix Outlaws winning 2-1 in extra innings. Scott McDonald went in as a pinch runner and Scott Leonhardt batted in the winning run in that game. They advanced to the second playoff game against the Perkasie Rise from Pennsylvania, who were ranked sixth in the tournament. It was a really great game with the Outlaws being ahead 1-0 going into the sixth inning. The "Rise" took advantage of the tiring pitcher and hit two homeruns to go ahead 3-1. The Outlaws failed to earn the runs back in the seventh. They were defeated and ended a great week at the ISC II World Tournament. Both local men were very proud to cents. There have been many changes in' their lives but none so many as- after their children Robert and Margie were born. Ruth ended by quoting Aristotle, "without friends no one would want to live, even if one had all other goods. We are blessed to have such wonderful and faithful friends." The crowd joined in singing For They Are Jolly Good Fellows. A bountiful lunch was prepared and served by Joyce, Doreen, Doris and Lori. On Monday, Aug. 14 a few people from the village and area went by motorcoach from Wingham to Sarnia. They boarded the Duc D'Orleans, for an exciting luncheon cruise. They set sail on the brilliant blue waters of the St. Clair River; an have made it to be one of the top eight teams in the tournament and be members of the Kitchener Phoenix Outlaw team. The eventual winner of the tier II Division was another Ontario team, the Tavistock Merchants, who were ranked 22 at beginning of play: In the Tier II of the World Tournament teams participated from California, Montana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York Ohio, Colorado, Montana, Alberta, Washington, Illinois, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. There were many local people down to the excellent tournament that ran from Sunday to Friday. Scott and Scott appreciated the support of all who went to cheer the team on. Ontario and Michigan.
