Brussels Livestock report
Fed steers sell on strong, active trade
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Aug.
18 were 1,917 head of cattle, 894
lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed
steers and heifers sold on a good
strong active trade. The choice steers
and heifers sold $94 to $97 with sales
to $103.75. Second cut sold $90 to
$94 with the cows selling on a strong
active trade.
On Thursday the veal and lambs
both sold on a very good active trade.
The sheep sold steady. On Friday
calves sold $2 to $3 higher while the
yearlings sold on a steady market.
There were 527 steers on offer.

signed forty steers averaging 1,444
lbs. selling for an average of $96.07
A group of 10 Huron County 4-H
members and two chaperones have
been given an experience of a life-
time this summer by participating in
a 4-H exchange with members of
Rangeland 4-H Club which is west
of Innisfail, Alberta at SpruceView.
The exchange is organized by the
Canadian 4-H Council and the trav-
el costs are paid by the Department
of Canadian Heritage of the
Government of Canada.
While in Alberta from July 10 -
18, the Huron group toured
Drumheller, a local feedlot which
housed 9,000 head of cattle, visited
Olds College, marveled at the scenic
areas of the mountains including
Banff and hiked up Johnson
Canyon. They spent a day at the
Calgary Stampede and were privi-
leged to visit behind the scenes to
view the chuckwagons and visit with
the owners, outriders and other
members of their team.
The group went water sliding at
Lake Sylvan and boating, water ski-
ing at -Dickson Lake.
Many barbecues were held in our
honour.
From Aug. 7-15, 10 members
from Alberta toured here in Ontario.
The group saw Lynn Farms feedlot,
the white bean processing plant at
Hensall Co-op, Ice Cultures and
with one gold steer weighing 1,315
lbs. selling to Dominion Meat
Packers for $102. Andrew Mitchell of
Listowel, consigned four steers aver-
aging 1,258 lbs. selling for an aver-
age of $99.18 with two limousin
steers averaging 1,228 lbs. selling to

M. Bauman of St. Clements, con-
signed four steers averaging 1,389
lbs. selling for an average of $95.64
with one limousin steer weighing
1,415 lbs. selling to Dominion Meat

of Newton, consigned twelve steers
averaging 1,452 lbs. selling for an
avenge of $93.71 with one limousin
steer weighing 1,400 lbs. selling to

Klaver dairy farm. The crowds at
Wonderland were experienced. They
visited Robinson Maple Products,
Todds' sheep operation, supper at St.
Helens Hall prepared by Lila
Rintoul and some Mennonite fami-
lies.
A day was enjoyed in Niagara
Falls and another in Goderich. They
took a trip to Walton to see the site at
the TransCan motocross.
Ontario 4-H Ambassadors Tammy
Fischer and Erica Murray put
together some great activities at the
wind-up barbecue.
The 16 days were full of activities
and full of memories as all the 4-
Hers grew from this experience.
The members have learned many
new things about Canada and have
developed new ties with people from
another community. Knowledge of
their own community was gained
and they increased their self confi-
dence by developing personal skills.
The two diverse groups meshed
together to form life-long friend-
ships. "Huron County members
were ambassadors of the community
when visiting and hosting," said
Chaperone Jacquie Bishop. "It has
made for a very memorable summer
vacation for 2006 as much excite-
ment is shared amongst the group as
they talk about their experiences."
