Muskrat
Festival
deemed
a success
By Duane Rollins.
Wingham Advance-Times
According to North Huron council
the Wingham Musical Muskrat
Festival exceeded expectations in its
first year of existence.
The festival more or less broke
even in 2006.
However, that's a better result than
some people might have expected.
"It's not going to be a money
making event in one year,"
councillor Arnold Taylor said. "It's
probably not going to happen in a
couple years either. So, for it to do
this well right lway, I think it's fair
to say that council is very happy
with the result."
Earlier this month, Muskrat
Festival committee member Steve
Sabourin reported to council about
the festival.
He said that the committee found
the first year a learning experience,
but that it was happy with the overall
result.
Sabourin said the highlight of the
event was a cardboard box boat race
and plans are to make that the focal
point of future festivals.
However, some events will be
scaled back in future years until the
event becomes more established.
In terms of dollars and cents, the
festival broke even after removing a
$5,000 loan it received from North
Huron council.
Sabourin asked council to assist
the committee by loaning it money
to pay its bills. However, Sabourin
stressed- that the committee planned
to repay council quickly.
