THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 2006. PAGE 9.
There's lots of news around the
Walton area. Let's start with the
good news of new arrivals.
There is a new grandson for Brian
and Sharon Pryce. Darcy Brian is the
newest, addition to the Pryce clan
and proud parents are Dwayne and
Karen.
Celebrating the arrival of their son
are Joe and Rhonda Ryan. The
youngest Ryan is named John
(Jake): He has blessed the lives of
the Ryans and Stadelmanns.
Having visitors this month is
Jeanne Kirkby. Jeanne has hosted
her daughter-in-law Von and
Belgrave PeeWees beat Colborne
12-6 in the A championship game
Saturday, Aug. 12 in Lucknow.
Belgrave finished the year with
only one loss for the entire season.
The team played their first game
in the year-end tournament Friday
night against Ethel and won 21-6.
They played their second game on
Saturday beating Hullett II .by a
score of 11-4.
Finishing the year in first position
granted them a bye to the final game
at 6 p.m. The team was pumped and
played with a lot of heart, defeating
Colborne to capture the A title.
Coaches said, the entire team
played hard all summer. "We could
not have asked for a better bunch of
ball players," they stated.
The coaching staff acknowledge
their support.
Teams in the league were Ethel,
Lucknow, Hullett I, Hullett II,
grandchildren Melanie and Jean.
Jean attended the Kid's Corner of the
Mennonite Church where Jeanne
was a helper.
Holidaying with Grandma and
Grandpa Hackwell was young
Sebastian. He is the son of Pam and
Eddie Andrades. Sebastian likes to
help out at Uncle Elliott's, to feed
the cats and help Grandpa Howard
cut the lawn. Grandma Audrey keeps
him busy as well. Having treats
together is the best part of the day.
Here from Calgary for a visit are
Michael, Chrissy and Sydney
Warwick. They are staying with
mom Karin McDonald Calhoun in
Bayfield. They've been busy visiting
with Grandma Leona McDonald and
Rick and Jo-Ann and family as well
as other friends such as Maxine"
Marks in the area.
Reports on those recovering from
surgery or injuries are all good at
this time. Cassandra Banks is feeling
stronger and straighter every day as
her muscles recover from the back
surgery she had.
Seaforth, Kirkton, Colborne,
Stanley and Brussels.
The Belgrave roster was Andrew
Hess, Adam Cronin, Ellen Cook,
Collin Whitfield, Kesley Smith,
Matthew Hallahan, Tyler Stevenson,
Loretta Thompson, Trevor Raynard,
Jason Hallahan, Matthew Cottrill
and Brittany Weber. Coaches were
Karen Cook and Andrea Stevenson.
Jim Blake is in Wingham hospital
and is doing well. As with most
people, lying around doing nothing
is tough when you know all the jobs
that need to be done. Of course
visitors help to pass the time.
Mitch Blake is also coming along.
A new injury to report is to Kim
Strome. Kim was hit in the head at
baseball and was knocked
unconscious. She was taken to
London hospital and at time of
writing, we understand she was to be
released after a few days. We hope
all is well with her and that she
recovers completely.
Our condolences to the Pethick
family on the passing of Grace
Pethick. Deepest sympathy to Ken
and Val, Rick, Andy and David
Pethick and Kathleen Williamson of
Walton.
Our condolences go out to the
family of the late Ken Rogerson, to
his wife Marg, his sister Marg
McClure and sister-in-law Leona
McDonald and all their extended
families.
Home from Vancouver to attend
the funeral of his uncle Ken
Rogerson is Neil McDonald. He was
here for the weekend and spoke at
the funeral that was held in Clinton.
An early surprise party was
planned by Ralph and Joyce Tribner
to surprise and celebrate Mary
Davidson's 90th birthday which was
Aug. 14. Some 20 family members
gathered at the pavilion at Goderich
and had a great time enjoying a
potluck meal with birthday cake and
a carved watermelon basket with
melon balls created by Ralph.
The Davidson- family includes
Doug and Linda and family, Anne
and Robert and family, Joyce and
Ralph and family and Connie
Davidson and family.
The Walton birthday girls gathered
for a summer party last Wednesday.
Marie Coutts, Mary Humphries,
Marilyn McDonald and Anne Ryan
enjoyed a drive and tour of the
Bayfield area, followed by lunch at
JDs of Bayfield.
They took time to stop for a short
visit with Karin McDonald Calhoun
as well. -
Maxine Marks was away to visit
her cousin in Burk's Falls. She spent
time at a friend's cottage at Restoule
and while so close she stopped in to
see the old Walton hunt cabin. For
many years .the hunt cabin was a
getaway for a group of Walton men.
They built the large main room, two
bunk, two-bedroom cabin back in
the early 1970s and added a deck
back in the later 1970s.
It was passed down and since sold
to some other local men. Maxine
reports some great improvements
and an addition to the cabin have
been made.
Maxine also stopped for a visit
with friends in North Bay and toured
the Dionne Museum.
I was back to work delivering mail
for a week and I noticed a lot of
changes on my 140-km. route since
May. I was surprised to find two new
houses, two new hog barns, two
barns torn down, two shed additions,
two house additions, one house torn
down, one shed torn down, two new
horse paddocks, a cleared bush and
gravelled lot, two new pools, new
siding, roof, porch and well and a
whole row of huge old trees taken
down along the side of the road.
I could hardly believe the changes
since May, but time marches on and
so does the construction.
The Walton Early Years Program
still meets with parents and
youngsters every Wednesday
morning. On the hot, hot humid
Wednesday, it was so sticky that the
golf ball paintings wouldn't even
dry.
The group enjoyed singing about
their favourite summer sport —
baseball. '
Program director Lisa DeJong
showed the kids the gigantic bruise
on her leg from being hit at her ball
game. They were all amazed at how
many colours a bruise could be.
Children and caregivers are always
welcome to join the group on
Wednesday morning.
There was a wonderful crowd of
over 40 on hand to celebrate the
community shower in' honour of
bride-elect Stacy Linton at Duff's
United Church on Friday evening.
Hostess for the evening was Jo-Ann
McDonald. The evening's
entertainment and lunch was
presented by helpers Mary Bernard,
Heidi McClure, Gloria Wilbee,
Kelly McDonald, Val Shortreed and
pianist Glenda Morrison.
There were few readings and a
musical number by the Walton
acting troupe and then the gifts were
opened by Stacy, her mother Brenda
Linton and future mother-in-law
Shelley Courtney.
Many of Stacy's bridesmaids were
on hand to help with the gifts
openings. An insulated cooler bag
for the beach was decorated with the
bows and presented to Stacy along
with the teacloth embroidered by
Phyllis Mitchell.
A simple lunch of cookies and
juice followed Stacy's words of
thanks.
The Walton Brewers gathered at
Steve Knight's farm. They enjoyed
an afternoon of golf at Cranbrook
golf course, then a potluck dinner at
the house. They played frisbee, golf,
horseshoes and cards.
Two of the Walton Brewers have
earned the opportunity to play at the
ISC H Tournament of Champions
World Fastball Tournament being
held in Kitchener this week. Scott
Leonhardt and Scott McDonald
were picked up by the Kitchener
Phoenix Outlaws fastball team at the
beginning of the 2006 season.
They have played throughout the
season as well as the /qualifying
tournaments held in Southwestern
Ontario. They made the cut and saw
round-robin action until Wednesday
and hopefully advance to the playoff
rounds. Good luck boys.
Walton ladies Judy Emmrich and
Anne Halley have returned from a
week's camping and horse trail ride.
They were situated on a farm near
Cape Crocker where 90 horse
enthusiasts gathered for the week.
The girls enjoyed the joys of
camping and every day would pack
their lunch, saddle up the horses,
D.J. and _Cindy and take off for a
three-to-five-hour ride through the
area farms and Bruce Trail.
The weather was hot and they had
the experience of the wicked
thunderstorm that went through
Wednesday night, upsetting the tents
and soaking everything. They dried
out Thursday and went back to the
riding.
They report a great time with
campfires, stories and visiting with
old and new friends.
Judy and Anne belong to the
Chesley Saddle Club.
Welcome back to Donna Hannon
who has spent the last 10 days in the
Yukon. Donna was a resident there
