(Vicky Bremner photo) Brussels U-8s play Listowel II The season is coming to an end and in final play Brussels U-8s competed against Listowel. It was a great game, but Listowel came out strong and scored two fast goals on Derrick Waechter. Delayna Smith used her mighty kick and got one back for Brussels with Logan Kellington assisting. Listowel scored early in the second half with Jake Mitchell trying to stop it. Brussels wasn't finished, however. Smith scored again with Kyle Cronin assisting. Listowel won 4-2. Solid defence came from Waechter and Mitchell in net and Cody Hastings, Connor Bridge and Mackenzie McNichol. Close A Blyth player makes the grab in this close call at the base. Next in line was another tie between Roger Lloyd and Bill Johnston. Two birdies were recorded; Gord Cerson had a birdie on the second hole and Don Rae on number nine. *** One of the up-and-coming juniors, Trevor Hopf, played in the Canadian Junior Golf Association tournament at the Maples Ballantre Club at Stouffville on a hot and humid Aug. 1. He came in 1 1 th. The highlight of the day for Trevor was his eagle on the 16th — 474-yard, par-five hole. *** The Legion/Golf Club draw was made. The winner of 18 holes of golf with carts and dinner for 12 was Bob Cleland from Mildmay. Second prize was 18 holes of golf with carts and dinner for eight. This was won by Bob Johnston, Wingham. The third prize of 18 holes of golf with carts and dinner for four was won by Russ Taylor. *** On Aug. 8 the ladies competed for the Wilma Kerr trophy. This was an 18-hole competition, for members over 50 on opening date- gross score. Although numbers were few, competition was keen. The winner was Maxine Robinson. *** Wednesday men's night continues to be popular with 29 out. Joel Riley with eight pars and one bogey for a nine-hole score of 36 took top honours in A flight. Eric Hopf's 41 was top for B flight. Low nets in A flight went to Dan Campbell and Brendan Chester while B flight winners were Jim Ross and Steve Nixon. Joel Riley topped off a great night of golf winning closest to the pin awards on holes one and seven with Don Rae closest on the third hole. *** On Thursday Buff's gang had 22 out with scores a little on the higher side. Only three birdies were recorded with Murray MacLennan and Conor McDonagin having birdies on number three and Doug Reinhart with a birdie on number nine winning nine skins. Bill Robinson had the low score for the night with second going to Rob Gallaher. Jack McPherson had his best drive of the season on number four and won the skin for the longest drive.
