Hosts needed for Coffee Break
Plans are once again brewing at
The Alzheimer Society of Huron
County as they prepare for their 11th
annual Coffee Break fundraiser. The
official date is Thursday, Sept. 21,
By Duane Rollins
Wingham Advance-Times
If you were to type "Wingham"
"job" and "training" into Google, the
search engine would comeback with
40,700 results.
Suffice to say, that could be a tad
daunting for someone who was
looking for an easy way to find local
job training opportunities.
It's with that in mind that the On-
line Learning in Rural Communities
Project is developing the web-portal
myspokes.ca
According to project co-ordinator
Heather Cousins, the website
will benefit residents of both
counties.
"There is a lot of good information
out there," Cousins said. "We hope
that by putting it all in one place it
but any day in September is just fine
to host a Coffee Break event. "We
are beginning our quest for
enthusiastic and creative people to
host coffee breaks all throughout
will be easier for people to access it."
Cousins said the site will likely be
officially launched in late September
or early October. However, browsers
may see some activity on the site
prior to the official launch.
According to Cousins, the site was
inspired by research completed by
the University of Guelph.
That research indicated that more
than 40 per cent of the local labour
market in Huron and Perth Counties
had an interest in on-line learning.
However, Cousins said, too often
local people seeking information
were not getting relevant advice.
"We were finding that the rural
communities were getting lumped
into the larger urban areas," she said.
"They may not have access to those
areas.
"With spokes, we will still provide
Huron County. Simply invite your
friends, neighbours, colleagues and
clients to "take a break" and make a
donation to the Alzheimer Society of
Huron County," said Theresa Wilson
information on formal educational
opportunities at places like
Conestoga College or Fanshawe
College if that's what they are
looking for, but we will also provide
information on formal and informal
opportunities , in their own
communities."
Cousins said the website will also
benefit local employers..
"It's known that well trained
employees are beneficial to
companies, so we will provide
information from an employee
perspective as well."
Eventually, the website will also
provide job search tips and links to
local help wanted ads, according to
Cousins.
"We want it to be a one stop
destination for people in Huron
Perth.
of the Alzheimer Society.
"If you were a home host last year,
or held a break at your place of
employment we hope that we can
count on your support again this
year.
Last year 98 Coffee Breaks were
held throughout Huron County,
hosts welcomed friends and
colleagues and raised more than
$13,000. Amazing success!"
Every new event means, new
people are being reached with the
Alzheimer Message.
Ninety per cent of money raised
during Coffee Break stays in Huron
County to help the Alzheimer
Society provide education and
support for persons with Alzheimer
disease, their families and care
givers. The remaining 10 per cent is
designated for research.
For more information on how to
host a Coffee Break, contact Wilson
at the Alzheimer Society Of Huron
County at 519-482-1482 or 1-800-
