Hughson gives incredible performance
`Stompin' Tom' on stage
Stompin' Tom (Randy Hughson) prepares to return his
Junos in this scene from Blyth Festival's The Ballad of
Stompin' Tom written by David Scott, which opened the
season on Friday night. (Terry Manzo photo)

There couldn't possibly have been
a more fitting season opener for
Blyth Festival on Friday night than a
play which pays tribute to a true
national icon.
" On the evening before Canada
Day, The Ballad of Stompin' Tom
told the story of Tom Connors, his
life and his music in a manner that
entertained, inspired and
enlightened. It doesn't get much
more Canadian than Stompin Tom, a
recipient of the Order of Canada,
honorary doctorates from two
universities, the highest placement
by an artist in the Greatest Canadian
The Brubachers of Ethel
Restaurant & Bakery
Music Contest in 2004 and winner of
six Junos.
And you don't have to be a fan
(trust me on this) to enjoy this
production.
Playwright David Scott, whose
previously penned There's Nothing
in the Paper appeared in Blyth in
1997, became intrigued by the
legend after reading his
autobiographies. First there is his
music, which has hit just the right
note for many of his countrypeople
from coast to coast.
But more importantly there is his
'story, one of adversity, challenge and
tenacity. Beneath it all, is an
incomparable love of his country
and the people in it.
Scott, who met with Connors after
having begun his play, likes his
subject and it shows. He has written
a homage that shows the heart and
soul of Connors. Ballad begins as
Connors has been taken away from
his mother. It follows through to his
adoption by a gentle man and his
hard-hearted wife, his life on the
road and ultimately his success.
Scott has said that the most
The fourth biennial conference on
Lake Huron's coastal environment is

a.m. until 4 p.m.. Registration,

or coastalcentre@lakehuron.on.ca
Lake Huron Centre for Coastal
Conservation is presenting the
conference which will examine the
current condition of Lake Huron and
explore what can be done to by
individuals and coastal communities
to retore the ecological health of the
lake.
Keynote speaker is Steve
Hounsell, - president of Ontario
Nature. Chuck Southam,
Environment Canada, who is
responsible for tracking and
interpreting lake level changes will
be presenting a workshop on lake
levels past, present and future.
difficult part in writing the play was
in deciding which of Connors' many
stories to tell. And indeed at times,
there is a sense that he's trying to
squeeze as much into it as possible.
But for the most part he succeeds in
successfully condensing a larger
than life tale into a worthy precised
version.
Directed with a light touch by
Festival artistic director Eric Coates,
Ballad melds concert with theatre,
music with story. Humour is allowed
to sneak up on you and pathos isn't
spread too thickly.
And while actor Randy Hughson
stated in an interview that he would
not be trying to imitate Connors, his
portrayal is spot on. From
mannerisms to corny jokes Hughson
is Stompin' Tom from the tip of his

Support in a number of roles
comes from Festival favourite Jerry
Franken, Rebecca Auerbach in her
Festival debut, Darren Keay and
Brigit Wilson. Sam Sholdice, an
alum of the Festival's Young

teenage Tom, while Curtis to Brinke,

is Tommy.
Also making an appearance are
children Tatum Bedard and Carlene

The Ballad of Stompin' Tom is a-
fascinating story of a man who has
walked more of this country than
anyone, and made it his family. It
runs at Blyth Festival until Aug. 12.
