PAGE 25. Co-op features McDonnell's work Carol McDonnell is the featured member artist at Goderich Co-op Gallery, 54 Courthouse Sq., Goderich, for the month of July. Moving beyond the streetlights into rural Ontario opened up a new world for Goderich Co-op Gallery member and photographer, Carol McDonnell. As an urbanite McDonnell was caught up in the 'hustle bustle' of urban life. Passage through the pastoral countryside was just a blur. But with soulmate and buddy photographer Jerry, inhabiting a woodlot-swamp with her family, and a plethora of diverse wildlife, the change of pace raised a new attentiveness to a different kind of world. Her photography reflects this fresh awareness in the solitude often found in their habitude of a largely untouched rural environment. There is a new light and a new music to be seen through her lens. This landscape changes personality with the seasons. And McDonnell's images present an ever-changing show. Capturing the gradations in the value and intensity of natural light becomes a priority in her work. The subject material shows swamps and marsh, forest, and neighboring fields and streams. McDonnell has pointed her camera further afield on recent trips with partner Jerry — across Canada and around the globe. She found great inspiration in a recent trip to Portugal. In addition to her photos she will share her passion " for rughooking, presenting creations devised from hand spun and hand dyed wool. She will include prints showing impressions of this warm, sunny country, but in the less-travelled areas, away from the 'beaten track' — into the hinterlands of Portugal, so to speak. She has used her camera to interpret history and to capture the impression of /the land. McDonnell's work has been shown in Toronto, Stratford, Blyth and Goderich. She won the overall prize at the last Huron Tourism photography contest, and the Donnelly & Murphy Viewers' Choice award at the Goderich Co-op Gallery in 2002. Both McDonnells are active members of the Co-op Gallery, recently organizing the photo show Business as Usual in 2006. They also have organized many shows for the Blyth Festival Art Gallery. A recent article in the international Pearl McGown Rughooking Magazine included a photo and write-up about Carol's handcrafted rug, Cape Random, Newfoundland. Carol has studied at the Haliburton School of the Arts, the Southampton Art School, and has taken successive private lessons to support her continued exploration of photography, painting, rughooking, and printmaking. The Gallery is open Monday through Saturdays, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information, call 519- 440-0523. Business Directory
