A year after Huron County
councillors voted to take legal action
if neighbouring counties didn't pay
up for ambulance calls into their
territories, the issue is still dragging
on because nobody wants to make
the first move.
"Other people won't agree (to pay
Huron) because other people owe
them money," explained warden
Rob Morley in answer to a question
at the June 1 meeting of county
council. Lambton County, for
instance. doesn't want to come to an

Huron County councillors have
approved a study into providing a
tire route to the rear of Huronlea
home for the aged in Brussels.
Councillors approved spending up
to $2,000 to prepare plans for the
construction of a road and sidewalk
along the back of the building to
give better access to 'firetrucks.
- South Huron councillor Ken Oke
wondered why the road hadn't been
constructed when the home was
built. Warden Rob Morley explained
that the road wasn't, and still isn't,
agreement with Huron until the City
of Chatham pays what it owes
Lambton for ambulance calls into
that municipality.
Meanwhile, Morley said
Chatham's mayor told him during a
luncheon meeting that her city won't
pay surrounding municipalities until
the province gets involved.
Meanwhile Perth County is
delaying paying its bill to Huron
until it is paid what it's owed by
Wellington County and Waterloo
Region.
Asked what the province's
position seems to be. county
treasurer David Carey said "the
required to meet the building Lode
but the Brussels Fire Department
has expressed concern about the
lack of access to the rear of the
building.
North Huron councillor Doug
Layton agreed with that concern,
saying that in all but the driest
months of the year a heavy firetruck
would get bogged down trying to
drive aeross the lawn to get to the
rear of the building in an emergency.
The new road would also give
better access for maintenance staff.
SoUth Huron councillor Dave
Urlin wondered if the county
couldn't use its own engineering
province is keeping their lips closed
tightly on this one".
With the stalemate continuing,
county council's year-old motion to
take legal action if there was not a
swift resolution remains on the
books. But chief administrative
officer Larry Adams recommended
against taking the legal route.
Renfrew County sued Ottawa two
and a half years ago and the suit is
not nearly moving 'to completion,
Adams said, while legal bills are
mounting.
Meanwhile a meeting with Bruce
and Grey Counties is set for June 16
to discuss the issue.
department and construction crews
to save money in planning and
building the road.
Homes' administrator Barb
Springall said she would like to
discuss the matter with county
engineer Don Pletch before turning
to someone from outside the county
staff for the plans.
