PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN By Debbie Bauer Cali 529-7820 FROM AUBURN 4-Hers go animal with new club By_Reba Jefferson On June 2, Wawanosh 4-H held its first meeting for Animal Friends at 7 p.m. at June Robinson's. The leader, Mary Ellen Foran began the meeting with the 4-H pledge and went over the club's objectives. Then she led the roll call, asking members what their favourite animal is. The election of officers followed. Melissa Higgins was . voted president and Jolande Oudshoorn is vice-president. The secretary will be a revolving position. Reba Jefferson volunteered to be press reporter. The members divided into groups of two. One group went outside and was given an animal and told to make that sound. The other group was given an animal and was blindfolded. The-members that were blindfolded were to listen and try to find the animal sound of the animal they got. Members then took turns reading information on looking after pets and things you need to consider before purchasing. They also filled out how much care each animal needed. Members are to pick a pet and do a project on it. Members are to 'decide on their pet before the next meeting. By Lois Elliott District PRO The Huron West District of the Women's Institute held its 106th annual meeting at the Auburn Community Hall on May 29. President Debbie Bauer chaired the meeting which was hosted by the Auburn branch, with the theme. It's Not What You Start But What You Finish. Opening exercises and annual reports were received. Greetings were extended from London area president, Glenna Ladell. The curators' workshop will be held Tuesday, Aug. I at Coldstream with the theme Then and Now. Provincial conference is Aug. I I - 15 at Fanshawe College. London Area Convention is Thursday, Oct. 5 at Thorndale Community Centre. - Others bringing greetings were Huron Perth -District. Darlene Harding; • Huron South, - Jane Dearing; Perth South, Renata Rose and the new Southern Region hoard director, Ilene Chesterman. The- 4-H report prepared by Kim Higgins was read by Wilma Higgins. She stressed the great need for more 4-H leaders. June Robinson, an Auburn Women's Institute member. has led 94 clubs. Each year a cash donation is given to "Friends of 4- H". Shelley McPhee-Haist of Town and Country' Support Services, presented a detailed account of the many programs and services available to seniors in Huron and Perth Counties. She stated there are more than 200 people on staff and over 500 volunteers who helped 4,000 clients last year. The demand for help and care is increasing. Now 13 communities have Dining for Seniors program. Thirty per cent of funding is received from the government letiiiing 70 per cent to local funding.:: For services call North Huron. 357-3222; Central Huron, 482-9264 and South Huron. 235-0258. Everyone sat down to a potluck noon luncheon. after which a large selection of plants and miscellaneous items were sold. Guest speaker, Neil Levine, manager of public and government affairs from EPCOR was the guest speaker. The headquarters are in Edmonton, Alberta. EPCOR is one of Canada's top providers of power and water._EPCOR's Kingsbridge 1, a 40 MW wind power project near the shores of Lake Huron and Goderich was completed in March and is generating power to Ontario's electrical grid system. Pending regulatory and other approvals, Kingsbridge 2 will consist of 69 wind turbines generating about 160MW and will be constructed north of K I in the Twp. of Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh. The next speaker was Gertie Gerrits, second stage manager of the Women's Shelter in Goderich, who said the program has been successful with councillors for both women and children.
