The Waterloo Regional Fire
Services Mutual Aid Association in
co-operation with Doon Heritage
Crossroads invites everyone to one
of the most exciting events to take
place in Ontario this spring — the
14th annual Waterloo Regional
Emergency Services Muster, Games
and Parade at Doon Heritage
Crossroads in Kitchener on
Saturday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to
4:30 p.m.
Back by popular demand will be
the Waterloo Regional Police matrix
impaired simulator and impairment
goggles, sponsored by Toyota,
which illustrates the effects of
alcohol on a driver in a perfectly safe
environment.
The Ontario Provincial Police will
be demonstrating their roll-over unit
and Kitchener Fire Department will
have the smoke house set up for kids
to go through.
Ongoing demonstrations that
focus on public education and safety
will take place throughout the
day including the Waterloo
Regional Police canine unit and
emergency response unit and the
music of the Ontario Provincial
Police Commissioner's Own Pipes
and Drums.
Displays, emergency services
related collectibles, great food, and a
parade of historical vehicles will
round out a day of fun, education
and entertainment for the whole
family.
The `Muster' will be the gathering
of fire engines and other emergency
service vehicles, on display for
visitors to look at — both inside and
out. Vintage and new fire,
ambulance and police vehicles are
planned to take part.
Traditionally, firefighters games
or competitions were a test of basic
firefighting skills and equipment.
The spirit is still alive today as teams
representing different fire
departments will compete in games
of water ball, bucket races and
ladder and hose races.
Admission to the event is by cash
donation to this year's three
emergency service supported
programs: WRAPP-C — The
Waterloo Region Arson Prevention
Program — Children; Vision 2000 —
The Waterloo Region Police
program for at risk youth; and the,
Cambridge Ontario Provincial
Police Child Seat Belt Systems
Program.
The first 300 families through the
gate will receive a `goody bag'
containing emergency services
colouring books and safety tips.
For further information, call
Doon Heritage Crossroads at 748-
1914.
Visitor parking for the event will
be at Canada Alloy Castings'
parking lot, Lear Seating and at
Waterloo Furniture Components
parking lot, located at the corner of
Homer Watson Blvd. and Manitou
Drive. Free bus shuttle service to
and from Doon will be provided
throughout the day.
Each spring the Blyth Festival
holds Huron County's largest used
book aale in Blyth Memorial Hall.
A large selection of books,
organized by a dedicated and
informed group of avid book lovers
over an entire week preceding the
sale, are sorted into several
categories. Last year 46 volunteers
logged over 325 hours. Cookbooks,
children's book and collector's
editions are perennial bestsellers.
The annual booksaie is one of the
Festival's longest running and most
successful fundraisers. Margaret
Webster, Blyth Festival board
member and event co-ordinator
said the event has netted well over
$100,000 for Blyth Festival
programmes over 26 years.
"This is an awesome event," said
Webster. "You never know what
people are going to donate. It's
always a surprise as people are very
generous with their used books."
Do you have books to contribute?
The committee is accepting books
all week from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at
Blyth Memorial Hall. New and
used books (fiction/non fiction for
adults and children), videos,
