Council prohibits open fires in urban areas Huron East council was asked by staff to remind its residents that open air fires are prohibited except on private property in urban areas. On private property, fires are limited to barbecues or out-of-door fireplaces for the sole purpose of cooking food. Any fire must be away from buildings and flammable matter. In response to questioning, Jack McLachlan, clerk-administrator reported that there had been a lot of complaints and calls notifying the administration about set fires which led to this reminder. ** * Council approved the recommendation by treasurer- finance manager Brad Knight regarding the reinvestment of the Brussels trust fund. Initially the monies had been invested in short term funds, and the returns were low. Knight was directed to invest the fund in increments of $100,000. *** Council declared June 23, 24, and 25 and July 8, 9 and 10 community festivals for Ethel's minor ball tournaments. *** Alvin McLellan shared Brussels recreational committee's concerns over its electricity costs in comparison to those of the Seaforth arena. He said that the committee is interested in changing the lights immediately, rather than waiting for the building evaluation to be completed. Money would be used from a recreational committee fund and replaced as savings were realized from the new lights. Council supported the quest for reduced costs, but advised that there may be some wiring conflicts to address. *** Council passed a bylaw permitting the use of electric personal assistive mobility devices on sidewalks within the municipality. McLachlan indicated that he had spoken with the City of London regarding their experience with skegways on sidewalks and in parks. London had not experienced any problems during the year that its bylaw has been in effect. *** Council endorsed Wingham's participation in the Kraft CBC Hockeyville 2006 competition. -*** The motion regarding the repair of the Seaforth Bowling Green decorative fence which was tabled at the previous meeting was passed after the clerk-administrator informed council that preparation for the fence would only cost about $2,000, bringing the total cost for the project to $15,000. *** In response to a report and recommendation from the treasurer, council voted to return Seaforth's sewage levy to the 2005 level. *** Council approved the recommended tax write offs. The majority were from property that was vacant or incorrectly assessed at the residential rather than the agricultural rate. Youngsters eagerly await new uniforms Continued from page 6 Pink and florescent colours were popular with everyone. As they waited for dismissal, the little girls helped each other wrap up the teddies, making slings out of their sweaters. They were anxious to keep their bears out of the dust for the walk home. A group of Grade is and 2s gathered at the gate, watching and waiting in their school uniforms. Word had quickly spread that there were good things happening at Kondwa. We were able to bring them in and let them choose a teddy too. A very sad older girl named Jess arrived, not able to go to school today. She had no socks to wear with her uniform. Fortunately we were able to provide her with a few pairs from Canada and a bonus bear. She went home smiling and promising to return to her school the next day. The remaining items were left for Angela to distribute on her visits to HIV-positive children in the compound. A stack of baby blankets would be delivered to a young woman, who was expecting a baby any day and had been abandoned by her husband Angela and , her teachers pronounced it to be a grrreat day despite the chaos created by us visitors. They were delighted with the blankets and teddies and the extra money we were able to hand over. The blankets were only $15 each, rather than the original estimate of $20. The extra money will be used for underwear, warm sweaters and school socks. We had a good discussion about the future and how we in our community in Canada (Huron County) might be able to continue to support the Kondwa Centre and the Flying Angels School. We feel really blessed to have been able to bring the blankets and teddies to Kondwa. Meeting the children was fantastic and receiving the hugs, "I love yous" and grins from these happy little souls has been the highlight of the week. We feel really humbled by Angela at Kondwa and Bernard at Flying Angels School. Despite the overwhelming poverty and precarious health of the compound, these two individuals have a vision for the future. They witness miracles everyday and keep trusting in God to provide. One day before we arrived with our huge suitcase of school supplies, Bernard was asking Angela for pens for his newly opened high school, 25 children in the living room of house. While they wait, they work. Planning toilets where only a pit stands now, petitioning for food, encouraging widows to support each other, collecting pennies from the neighbourhood and scheming to create a future for the most vulnerable children in their community. They do all this with much laughter and positive enthusiasm. To those who have contributed to the work being done in Zambia, thank you for your support. Your money, knitting, sewing ,good wishes and school supplies S Thank you Bob Rowe and Colleen Elliott have been delivered and will make a real difference in the lives of these beautiful children who have wonderful names: Blessing and Precious, Peleka and Sunday, Mwamba and Gibson, Shadrach and Meschak. Angela and Bernard send their love and thanks. The children of Flying Angels School nd Kondwa blow kisses to you and say Zikomo Kwambiri, thank you very much." • 0 70) Family Dining, Take-Out, Gas Bar Brussels 887-6951 Witheyippreciation... It has been a little over one year since we first decided to sell J.R.'s Not because we were seeking retirement, but because we wanted some positive changes in our daily lives. We also felt that J.R.'s needed some new energy and enthusiasm to carry on the vision we had, which was to give J.R.'s a city look with a country heart when we did the renovations over five years ago. When we first met Shahzad Ahmed, his wife Zahra and their two boys Sufyan and Hatim we knew we had found someone to take J.R.'s to the next level. Shaz will be working with all the present staff in their current capacities, and Colleen will stay on for an interim period of time to facilitate an easy transition. He is looking forward to meeting his customer base and making Brussels his new home town. It has always been very important for us that Brussels never lose the privilege of having a Restaurant and Gas Bar within the community. Other small towns and villages in our area are not as fortunate. Our wish is that you continue to support the new owner of J.R.'s and his staff, with the same support you have given us in the past. We would like to thank all of our customers for their many years of patronage to J.R.'s. It has always been encouraging to know we have such good friends within the village of Brussels and surrounding area. A very big thank you goes to our staff both past and present for choosing to work with us at J.R.'s - — we could not have done it without you. 'NW' 0
