Mary Scott of Knox, Stratford, Daily routines, ordinary rituals, all part and parcel of modern living . all require water. For most, if not all who are reading this, obtaining water is as easy as turning on a tap. Unless there is a power interruption. Then those of us, who get our water from a well, do not have access to water until the power is restored. .On such occasions I am reminded that clean water is a gift, a sacred gave the courtesy remarks and the meeting closed with a prayer. gift, from the Creator to be treasured, not wasted or polluted. Water was on the agenda of a meeting I recently attended. There I heard that there is the same amount of water on the earth as there was two billion years ago when dinosaurs roamed our planet. One per cent of the world's water is available for us to use; two per cent is frozen in glaciers; the remaining 97 per cent is salty and undrinkable. In relation to a hundred years ago, we use six times more water per person, on average 343 litres per Canadian. But clean water is not readily available in many places. One billion people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water. In Africa, 16 million people walk at least a kilometre to get water. Often they wait in long lines for their turn at the well. In the arid part of India, water is as expensive as milk and. many cannot afford to purchase water. Every eight seconds a child dies from water- related illness in developing countries.
