`Water a gift from God for all of creation'
By Rev. Ethel Miner Clare
Knox United Church, Belgrave
The laughter and splashing of our
grandsons, ages two and four, echo
throughout the manse. They are in
the bath. Shortly they will brush
their teeth and demand a glass of
water to delay heading off to bed.
Downstairs a load of laundry is
ready for the dryer. In the kitchen,
dishes are being loaded into the
dishwasher.
The Huron-Perth Presbyterial
annual meeting of the Women's
Missionary Society was held on Feb.
27 at Monkton Presbyterian Church.
President, Ina McMillan, opened
with words of welcome, opening
prayer and call to worship.
Greetings were presented by Rev.
Theresa McDonald-Lee on behalf of
the church session, Elizabeth Stewart
on behalf of the host WMS and
Eleanor Stevenson, moderator of the
Presbytery of Huron-Perth.
Literature Secretary, Lois Horne,
spoke on some of the books available
from the'Book Room in Toronto.
The roll call The Origin of Your
Group was taken from the theme
Celebrating WMS Heritage, There
were 72 members and guests
registered.
Area educational consultant. Rev.
Anne Yee-Hibbs, spoke on the early
history of the Huron-Perth
Presbyterial and the importance of
the WMS in the church. She was
ordained .25 years ago and was a
member of the WMS in all the
churches she served in. She closed
with a passage from Galatians.
Rev. Yee-Hibbs gave a prayer for
the new executive from the coming
year.
The adult group secretaries gave
their reports in the morning session.
The Singing Seniors from
Milverton opened the afternoon
session: Cromarty WMS was in
charge of devotions and Motherwell-
Avonbank PCW was in charge of In
Memoriam.
Vice-president Bernice Richards
introduced the guest speaker,
Graham Gould, director of Camp
Kintail, who spoke on the
Mississippi Mission where he helped
with the hurricane disaster. They
were housed at the Orange Grove
Presbyterian Church, Gulf Port and
helped with. the cleanup in Biloxi.
He also reported on programs
available at the camp this year.
Harrington PCW gave words of
appreciation.

all require water.
For most, if not all who are
reading this, obtaining water is as
easy as turning on a tap. Unless there
is a power interruption. Then those
of us, who get our water from a well,
do not have access to water until the
power is restored.
.On such occasions I am reminded
that clean water is a gift, a sacred

gift, from the Creator to be
treasured, not wasted or polluted.
Water was on the agenda of a
meeting I recently attended. There I
heard that there is the same amount
of water on the earth as there was
two billion years ago when
dinosaurs roamed our planet. One
per cent of the world's water is
available for us to use; two per cent
is frozen in glaciers; the remaining
97 per cent is salty and undrinkable.
In relation to a hundred years ago,
we use six times more water per
person, on average 343 litres per
Canadian.
But clean water is not readily
available in many places. One billion
people worldwide lack access to
clean drinking water. In Africa, 16
million people walk at least a
kilometre to get water. Often they
wait in long lines for their turn at the
well.
In the arid part of India, water is as
expensive as milk and. many cannot
afford to purchase water. Every eight
seconds a child dies from water-
related illness in developing
countries.
Even here in Canada, some First
Nation communities and others deal

with water problems.
Water is a basic requirement for
life. Water is gift from God for all of
creation.
But when water becomes a
commodity, a means for making a
profit, many are denied this
resource. There is enough water for
the earth's people if/ we work
together to ensure everyone has
affordable access.
But the question is whether or
not we are willing . to work to-
gether. Presbyterial meets
