Sports Girls prepare for tourney Enroute to victory After being down two games to none, the Brussels Novices fought back to take the championship three games to two. The final win was in front of a hometown crowd on Friday night. (Vicky Bremner photo) Atoms win WOAA Brussels Atoms are the WOAA division champs this year. The winning game was held in Brussels on Saturday, March 25 against the Wallace Sabres. The final score was 5-3. Brussels Bulls took both games of the two out of three series. There were no goals in the first period of the final game. Jordyn Scholdice, assisted by Adam Cousins and Brody TenPas scored with 7:31 left of the second period. Adam Cousins scored, unassisted The Blyth Tyke Is travelled to Hensall for their year-end tournament. The first game was against Seaforth. This proved to be a tough contest for Blyth with their lone goal being scored by Hunter Dale. Samantha Kerr played an awesome game in net stopping shot after shot. Blyth's next game was against Brussels. The scoring was started by Brussels, Nic Zwep unassisted. The next goal was scored by Drew Bromley assisted by Kerr and Brendan Howson. Blyth's Justin Rodgers assisted by Bromley put one past the Brussels goalie. With three minutes and 40 seconds left in the game Brussels Logan Kellington, assisted by Austin Johnston, scored to tie it up. There was six minutes of overtime play, but no goals were scored. This led to a shootout with Brussels coming out with one more goal then with two men in the penalty box and then once again assisted by Jeremy Ross. In the third period, with a score of 3-2 for Brussels, Cousins brought in two more with an assist by Brock McLean and Ethan Nichol followed by his fourth goal of the game assisted by Scholdice and Austin Johnson. Wallace scored once more before the game ended. Nathan Watson played a strong net. Blyth. Playing a great game in net for Blyth was Gavin Workman. Blyth Tyke 1 and Blyth Tyke 2 played the third and final game for the C championship. Scoring was started by Rodgers assisted by Amy Boyce from the Blyth I team. The second period scoring for Blyth I was done by Howson, Dale and Bromley with two. Boyce had one goal for the game. Assisting on the goals were Rodger with with, Howson with two and Dale with three. Scoring for Blyth II were Katherine Chalmers and Franklin Marshall with an assist going to Colton Rodgers. Great goaltending was done by Chad Treble for Blyth I and Brandon Marshall for Blyth II. This wraps up the season for the Tyke teams. The Saugeen Maitland AA Midgets are two weeks away from the provincial tournament in Mississauga, and are preparing for their opponents. On Saturday in Howick they played an exhibition game against their rivals, the Kitchener Rangers, who were one point higher than the Lightning at the end of the regular season. The game ended in a 3-1 On Tuesday, March 14 the Brussels Novice team travelled to Hanover for game one of the B finals. Hanover would own the first period by netting three goals. Early in the second Kai Hiemstra gave the visitors something to cheer about as he cut the lead to 3-1. Hanover responded to that goal and took a three-goal lead into the final period. Wyatt Ducharme made it 4-2 from Lexi Smith but that was as chose as Brussels came. Trailing 1-0 in the series, Brussels played host the following night. As in game one, Hanover came out strong, taking a 2-0 lead into the second period. Hanover struck again in the middle frame. Early in the third Logan Clark set up Hiemstra to make it 3-1. Hanover survived the Brussels assault and headed home for game 3 up two games to none. The Blyth PeeWee Bulldogs travelled to Sunderland, on Saturday, for game three in their trek to the All Ontario crown. From the drop of the puck it was clear the Dogs meant business. Fans were treated to a fast and furious game. Although the boys seemed to have the game in hand Sunderland scored first, but, not until 10:09 in the second period. Blyth goalie Willie Haines practically stood on his head to keep his team in the game. After a lot of hard work, Tyler Stevenson poked one past the Wings' netminder with just over two minutes left in the second period. Assisting his effort were Adam Cronin and Kirby Cook. That finished the scoring for the rest of regulation time and sudden- death overtime was in play. The victory for the Saugeen Maitland team. Kitchener opened the scoring in the second period but before the buzzer Joelle Reid directed a shot from Kassie Avery into the net. Kendall Whitfield also earned an assist. Stacey Scholten received a pass from Jenny Bults, and put the puck in the net on the short side for the go-ahead goal. Whitfield fired The next contest was played on March 21 in Hanover. With their backs to the wall, the Brussels players came out flying. Mid-way through the first Hiemstra scored. Ben Hruska assisted. The rest of the first along with the second belonged to the goaltender. Five minutes into the third homeside evened the score. Minutes later Hanover pushed ahead 2-1. With time under five minutes in the third, Hiemstra skated out of his zone and beat both Hanover defencemen to roof the tieing goal and keep Brussels alive. Just over a minute later Ducharme went coast to coast to give Brussels a 3-2 lead. With Hanover buzzing, Hiemstra put it away with a pair of goals, the second one assisted by Mitch Kellington. Brussels won 5-2. The following night in Brussels in front of nearly 200 fans, Hanover scored in the first. one past the Ranger goalie for the final goal, with the assist going to Alison Quennell. The Lightning will meet three tough teams in the provincial championships. Their first opposition will be Ottawa, Brampton and Cobourg. They must place first or second in their pool to advance to the next round. Early in the middle frame Hruska, from Kellington, tied it. Midway through the period Kellington gave the homeside the lead, then less than a minute later Clark fed Hiemstra who made it a 3-1 lead. The third period would be Matt McNichol's time to shine as he made many big stops in the Brussels net. So the hosts would knot the series at two apiece with the win. Game five this past Friday night in front of a packed Brussels arena was a game that would live up to its hype. Both McNichol and the Hanover goalie stole the show for the first 30 minutes of the game with each making big stops for their teams. With just under five minutes left in the third Hruska netted a Kellington pass to give the homeside a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later Hiemstra scored. The Blyth PeeWee Bulldog team consists of Haines, Alec Lorentz, T. Stevenson, Cronin, Cook, Matt Chalmers, Austin Sjaarda, Kevin Pennington, Cody Richmond, Matt Popp, Tyler Black, Trevor Raynard, Connor Prescott, and John Lecomte. They were assisted in this series by Jamie and Jeff Plaetzer and Ryan Sjaarda. Coaching staff includes Robb Finch, Pat Cronin, Christopher Howson and Dan Prescott. The Bulldogs received a trophy and medallions for their efforts and a large cheer from the fans. This weekend the boys travel to St. George for a year-end tournament
