Huron County will proceed with
its Best Start Network program even
though nobody knows how it will
end.
Evy McDonagh, children's
services manager with Huron
County Social Services explained
to councillors at the March 2
meeting of county council that $.1.6
million has already been received
from the provincial government to
create an additional 20 day care
spaces at a school in Goderich with
other spaces likely to be added in
Clinton and Seaforth and infant care
possibly added at Wingham Day
Care.

other families needing this service
please call Rev. Joan immediately.
Participating in the service on
Sunday were Teresa Baan by reading
the scriptures and Jim Campbell and
Neil McGavin by accepting the
collection.
A treasurer's report was printed in
the bulletin stressing the shortfall for
the church expenses.
The upcoming Raise the Roof
Auction being held at the Walton
Hall is hopefully going to be a very
successful event.

federal government has pledged to
break the federal-provincial
agreement for ongoing funding of
the program, Huron East councillor
Joe Seili wondered, "What happens
in 2007 and 2008?"
McDonagh said the county could
continue to support the additional 50
spaces despite cancellation of the
federal grant.
Pressed for an explanation John
MacKinnon, manager of social
services, noted the $1.6 million is
mostly capital funding to create the
spaces. The only staff person hired
has been a Best Start co-ordinator
and that person is on a contract that
will be terminated if the program is
cancelled.
He explained that his department

expected.
Families are encouraged to bring
the children as there will be a penny
auction for them as well as a food
booth. There is even going to be live
performances by the musical quartet
Beyond Bliss during the evening for
your entertainment.
A Sunday school meeting will be
held on Monday, March 20 at 7:30
p.m. All teachers are asked to take a
look for the missing UCW binder
and bag, which were accidently
removed from their shelf, and return
them if found.

that shelf. It's looking for donations
of grocery tapes.
additional 50 spaces as long as there
is doubt about the program's future.
The 50 spaces are sustainable, he
said.
MacDonagh explained that
parents will be picking up a portion
of the costs and there is money in the
budget to subsidize labour for the 50
spaces.
Warden Rob Morley noted that the
county often doesn't use all of its
annual provincial day care funding
and has to send some batik.
Seili questioned the advisability
of investing county money in
schools that aren't under county
control.
MacDonagh explained that the
program requires the county to look
first at the possibility of using
available spaces in schools.
We hope everyone has been saving
their tapes and printer cartridges.
It was a very emotional end to
Sunday's service as Rev. Joan
Tuchlinsky announced that she will
be leaving the Walton-Bluevale
Pastoral Charge in June. She is
moving onto a new phase in her
spiritual journey, working with the
K.W. sexual assault support centre
where she will be the public
education co-ordinator. She will
work with school groups,
community organizations and some
crisis line work as well.
Rev. Joan and her family have
been a great addition to the Walton
community and they will be missed
by all.
