THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 2006. PAGE 9.
The Belgrave Bonspiel was held
March 4 with a full field of 76
teams. Some teams were filled with
at least two curlers of "once-a-year
skill" so the laughs were many and
a good time was had by all.
In the early, Huron Bay Co-op
draw, the Lloyd Michie team went
undefeated. Members of the
winning team were Lloyd and
Nancy Michie and Marion and Roy
Taylor.
Les Shaw picked up second prize
with Maryon English of Cookstown
in third spot.
For the 11 a.m., Howson and
Howson draw, the Fred Meier rink
went undefeated for top spot.
Members of the winning team were
Fred and Linda Meier and Joyce
and John Thompson.
Murray McNichol captured
second prize with the Ross Peacock
rink in third spot.
The Michie rink, with the higher
point total, was declared overall
winner.

The Bantam mixed team coached
by Jennifer Elston came close to
qualifying to go to the regionals at
Mount Forest. They lost their first
game to Falconer of Vanastra then
racked up four straight wins 11-2
over Thompson of Exeter, 13-6 over
Forester of Wingham, 7-6 over
Dickson of Palmerston and finally
7-6 over Konings of Listowel in a
real thriller. Skip Kayla Bishop
made an excellent shot in the eighth
to get three for the win.
However, the team bowed to
Rundle of Exeter in the finals. The
team included skip Kayla Bishop,
The Blyth PeeWee Rep Bulldogs
successfully completed their semi-
final series, of the Ontario
championships, against Embro this
past Saturday.
The Bulldogs traveled to Embro
with a two-games-to-one lead
tucked firmly under their collars.
Embro came out with a have-to-
win attitude and the first notch in the
belt was won by Embro in the first
period.
The Dogs shook it off in the
second period when Adam Cronin
tied the game with a hard earned
goal, assisted by Tyler Stevenson
and Kirby Cook.
The action was fast and furious
and Blyth fans were feeling the heat
as the scoring was held until 4:07 of
the third period. Tyler Black swept
down the ice with an unassisted
effort to plunge Blyth ahead and win
the game. The roar in the crowd was
probably heard in Blyth.
Forwards Matt Chalmers, Austin
Sjaarda, Cody Richmond and Kevin
Pennington held the puck in the
opposing end to thwart Embro
chances. Defencemen Black, Trevor
Raynard, Connor Prescott and Matt
Popp kept shots down to a 25-15 in
Blyth's favour.
Backing the Dogs with some
remarkable goaltending again
during this series was Willie Haines
and Alec Lorentz. Howling from the
stands for his team-mates was John
Lecomte.
Coaches Robb Finch, Christopher
Howson, Dan PrescOtt and Pat
Cronin were very happy with the
boys' efforts. Parents of the
Bulldogs are extremely proud of the
team's achievements and invite you
all to come out and cheer them on
this weekend.
A best three-of-five series will be
held against Sunderland for the
OMHA E championship trophy.

12-4, Rus Taylor won over Aart
Devos 7-4 and Shawn Cottrill
defeated Bill Devos 8-4. The other
game was close as Cal Ruttan and
Don Edgar played the extra rocks to
break the tie with Ruttan coming
out the winner.

March is a busy month at the
Wingham Club with several
bonspiels.
On March 18 there is the Country
Mixed Bonspiel. I understand there
is one spot still to be filled.
On March 19 it's something new
with the junior bonspiel "future
stars in action."
And to wrap up the action, it's the
Curl for Cancer Fun Spiel,
Saturday, March 25. There will be
two six-end games open to any
combination of men and women,
experienced or novice. Each team is
asked to donate an item for a silent
auction. A good cause — get a team
together for a day of fun.

No rest for Wheeler
After a heartbreaking loss in
Princeton, New Jersey on March 4 to
end the season for the Colgate
women's hockey team, Brook
Wheeler arrived back at Colgate
University only to find an invitation
waiting to travel with the Colgate
women's softball team to' Osceola,
Florida.
Wheeler has joined the softball
team for her first season. She is a
goaltender with the Colgate
women's ice hockey team where she
has earned three varsity letters.
In less than a week she has gone
from the ice to the diamond with
some intense practices in between.
She has been added to the roster as a
designated hitter and first base.
The softball team flew to Orlando,
Florida to participate in the Rebel
Games, March 11-16 at the Osceola
Softball Complex. The Raiders will
play 10 games over a six-day stretch.
The first day of action saw them
split a pair of games and the same
for the second day of play.
If you want more details you can
go to www.gocolgateraiders.com

hockey website and vote for Wheeler
as she is up for Defensive Player of
the Year.
Wheeler lettered four years in
softball at Culver Academy in
Indiana, while playing first base. In
her senior year, she led her team to
the Sectional title.
In 2000, she was given the

Her most recent summer team was
the Brockton Wolverines in the
Ontario Provincial Women's Softball
