Looking for local heroes
There are so many people out there who do
so much to improve their community.
Now you have a chance to say thanks.
Nominate that special person for the 21st
Annual Citizen Citizenship Awards.
Each year a committee chooses an outstanding citizen from each of the Blyth and area
and Brussels and area communities to receive an award for contribution to the
community. If you know someone you think should be honoured, please fill in the ballot
and send it in. You may attach a longer explanation of why you think your nominee
should win, if you like. If you have nominated someone before and he or she didn't win,
please feel free to try again.

The Brussels and area Sparks,
Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and
Senior branch members gathered at
the Walton Hall for a weekend
retreat from Friday night to Sunday
afternoon.
The group of over 30 members
and leaders enjoyed doing crafts,
games, songs, dancing, making
meals and sleeping over.
Playing out in the snow, making
tracks and trails, gave them plenty of
fresh air.
They celebrated Thinking Day.
Mixing a group from ages five
to 16 can be challenging, but
reports say it was a great time for
everyone.
I had a great time, along with
friend Sandra Josling, attending the
Scott Tournament of Hearts held at
the John Labatt Centre in London,
from Thursday to Sunday. We saw
three draws on Thursday, two on
Friday and one each Saturday and
Sunday.
It was a great final game on
Sunday with B.C. defeating Team
Canada 8-6. There were some
excellent shots by both teams.
Being an "armchair quarterback",
I didn't always agree with the shots
called, but, darn, they didn't ask me.
We saw the Olympic bronze
medalists, team Shannon Kleibrink,
as well as Dave Nedouin and Marcel
Rocque from the Ferbey team.
More importantly were the many
local people we saw on the different
days we were there. We ran into
Ross Vietch, Gary and Beth Earl,
Irma Pryce, Neil and Marie
McGavin, Fred and Karen Uhler,
Ralph and Joyce Triebner, Mary
Davidson, Paul Dodds and Barb
Dunbar.
Our seats were four rows from ice
surface in the curve at the spectators'
end and we had people from
Thunder Bay, Ottawa and Kitchener
around us every day. We had great
time and a lot of fun talking with
those around us.
Travelling north to enjoy five days
of snowmobiling was the Ryan
family of Paul, Cheryl, Curtis and
Matt along with Ken and Brenda
Dalton. They stayed at a cottage in
the North Bay and Mattawa area.
They put nearly 800 km. on the
machines and had nice, but cold,
weather.
The area has very deep snow but
the trails were well groomed and
smooth.
They saw a couple of live moose
and one dead moose calf on the trail,
not hit by any of this group.
The machines ran well with no
mechanical problems. There was
only one broken mud flap on a
machine due to an "oops" by
Ken.
Ken reports that they had a
peaceful and enjoyable time.
Brenda's sister Janet and husband
Clint of North Bay brought supper
out one night and enjoyed the
evening visiting with all.
Congrats to Jacob McGavin, son
of Jeff and Shannon on winning the
junior division of Royal Canadian
Legion Zone level competition in
Clinton on Saturday.
He will compete at District Level
in Brussels on Saturday, March
18.
Congratulations to Doug and Janet
Mitchell who celebrated their 25th
wedding anniversary on the
weekend.
