Bantams eliminate Paisley
PeeWee
It was rough and tumble hockey action as the PeeWee
OMHA semi-final game was held at the Blyth arena this
weekend. There was a large turnout to cheer on the local

The Brussels Bantams playoff
season started with the elimination
of a tough opponent from Paisley.
Brussels took the first' game by a
score of 4-2. Scoring for Brussels
were Evan Ducharme with two,
Brian Burgess-and Brendan Stretton.
Assists went to Stretton, Westin
McLeod, Ducharme, Cole McLean,
Ben Gowing and Taylor Prior with
two.
Brussels headed to Paisley for
game two and was handed a
trouncing. After having total control
at the end of two periods it ended up
9-6 for Paisley.
Game three was also in Paisley.
The boys fought hard and played
well in the third but came up short
with a 5-3 loss.
Game four was home-ice
advantage for the Brussels boys. It
proved true as they got by Paisley 6-
4.
With the series tied, both teams
were eager for the win in the next

Midgets advanced to the next round
of playoffs after handily defeating
Waterloo 6 - 0. The game was played
Feb. 27 in Howick.
Tara O'Reilly opened the -scoring
three minutes into the game after
receiving a pass from Courtney
Sutherland and Carmen Carnochan.
Janette Hammell also scored in the
first period with the assist going to
Kendall Whitfield.
The remaining four goals were
scored in the second period.
Whitfield scored twice with assists
going to Shalena Dale and Alison
Quennell. Quennell scored after the
goalie missed the poke check while
the Lightning was shorthanded. The
final scoring opportunity came when
Sutherland carried the puck into the
offensive end, then- passed it out
front for a tic tac goal by Hammell to
O'Reilly.
The Lightning then played the
"trap" to hold their comfortable six-
goal lead.
Syd Brown earned the shut-out in
net.
The • girls travelled to Seaforth
Thursday night to play a second
game of the best-of-three series
against Stratford, Although the
Lightning outshot the Aces 25 - five,
they were unable to put one past the
Stratford goalie, who was the star of
the game.
Cassy Stafford earned the shutout
for the Lightning.
The Lightning advanced to the
next round of provincial playdowns.
game. It was great hockey with end-
to-end action. Scoring for Brussels
were Stretton and Cody Subject each
with a pair, Gavin Bowers and Prior
who scored unassisted.
Helping hands and- great passes
were credited to Stretton, Prior,
Subject, Bowers, Gowing, and
Ducharme with two.
Brussels won 6-4 and took the
series.
Making excellent contributions to
winning the series were Blake
Cardiff, Thomas Johnston, Robert
Cronin, and Herbie Runstedler.
Outstanding between the pipes
and determined to help win this
series was Ryan Smith.
Brussels would next play Zurich.
The squad didn't have enough on the
sticks to get by Zurich in their home
opener.
At the end of one Brussels was up
by two. Scoring were McLeod and
Ducharme. Assists were credited to
Prior, Gowing and Bowers.
The next game was in Howick on
Monday, March 6.
The girls lost their first game in
their second round of league
playoffs against Hamilton by a score
of 2-1.
The game was played in Howick
on Saturday, March 4.
The teams have only met once
before this season in an exhibition
game when the Lightning won 3-2.
The playoff game was a hard-
fought battle. Brown was amazing in
net as she stopped 25 shots.
The only goal for the Lightning
was scored by Bults, assisted by Erin
Burns.
The second game of the series was
to be played in Hamilton on March
5, but the game was postponed for
two weeks, due to personal matters
with the Hamilton team.
On Monday in Howick the
Lightning played a physical game
against Stratford.
The Lightning outshot the Aces
31-9 and outscored them 3-1.
The -first goal was scored with a
bullet of a shot by Bults, assisted by
Hammell.
The second marker was put in the
net as a result of a great effort by
Sutherland. O'Reilly and Hammell
earned the assists.
Joelle Reid scored the assurance
goal in the third period on a pass
from O'Reilly.
The win earned the Lightning a
berth in the OWHA Provincial
Tournament in early April in
Mississauga.
Zurich soon answered with two
quick ones.
In the third, Brussels could only
get one by the sharp Zurich tender
and it was scored by Subject.

Zurich won 4-3.
Home advantage for Brussels in
the next game proved to be on the
side of the visitors.
There was ample opportunity for
Brussels to score but the Zurich
goalie was solid. The game ended 3-
0 for Zurich.
Brussels was determined to get
back in this series. In the next game
they showed tremendous strength
and great hockey skills. Penalty
minutes played a factor, however,
with Zurich keeping Brussels
scoreless after three.
Zurich won 4-0 with a sweep of
the series.
Brussels Bantams fall to group
play with home-and-home
series.
The team will continue their
league playoff schedule on March 19
in Hamilton.
Fans were treated to some good
Bulldog action on Sunday at the
Blyth arena as the PeeWee Rep
.Bulldogs played game three of five,
in the OMHA semi-finals, against
Embro.
The Dogs were first on the
scoreboard with an inspiring.goal by
defenseman Tyler Black, who set it
up on a picture-perfect pass from
Adam Cronin.
This established the scene for the
rest of the game. The second period
saw Blyth leap ahead with three
more goals, two scored by Tyler
Stevenson, assisted by Kirby Cook
and Trevor Raynard and another
goal by Black, assisted by Cook.
Embro answered the call with two
goals of their own.
Period three had end-to-end
action, however Blyth forged ahead..
Embro doubled its score by adding a
couple of goals, the Do_gs tossed
another three in the opposing net to
leave the game with a 7-4 victory.
The third-period goals were
"'cored by Stevenson, Cody
Richmond, and Cook. Assisting
their efforts were Black, Cook,
Stevenson, Matt Chalmers and
Austin Sjaarda.
Team members Kevin
Pennington, Connor Prescott and
Matt Popp were awesome as they
quickly moved the puck out of
Embro's reach.
Goaltender Alec Lorentz played
tight between the pipes.
Game four is Saturday in Embro
at 5:30 p.m.
Coaches Finch and Howson were
pleased with the team's efforts and
hope they are as spunky next week.
