and times let you_ plan your outings
in advance. Snow and ice sculptures
— some 20 feet high — in different
parks get you out checking the city.
Horse and cutter or wagon rides let
you have a wee rest.
Skating the Rideau Canal is still
the highlight of Winterlude. The
reality of outdoor ice and the minus
20°C temperatures made the trek
this year quite invigorating.
Perhaps it was the influence of the
ongoing Olympics or perhaps just
beautiful cold weather but no matter
— we skated the length of the canal.
This is a first. We made it to the end
and did recover. That was 7.8 km
according to the brochure. That was
our Olympic moment.
Don't forget about World Day of
Prayer on Friday evening at Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship.
Oh my we're into March with
good things like family.birthdays, St.
Patrick's Day and March Break.
Lots of neat things to come.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Celebration and sense of pride are
my thoughts as I get ready to do this
column. I've just watched the
closing ceremonies of the 20th
Winter Games from Italy. Our
Canadian athletes have kept their
dreams intact and made it to the
Olympics.
Congratulations to everyone on
our team and a great big thank you to
all the parents and guardians and the
coaches who years and years ago did
not give up.
To me that is the Olympics, the
determination and drive that'puts the
sport in a league of its own. The
dream and the goal are ever present
as they practise and grow into the
athletes that we watched in the past
two weeks. Twenty-four medals!
Even better is that our medals come
in 10 sports out of a possible 15
offered. This is one of those times
that it needs to be remembered that
seconds really, really do count.
Dreams are planted and some of
the young people you know may be
just starting on a dream trip towards
Olympics of the future. So here's to
Vancouver and all of Canada as the
preparations continue for 2010.
Ralph and I attended the
Winterlude in Ottawa last weekend
and of course had a great time. This
event has been going for 28 years
and they have it down pat.All-day
