Girls get close
in first playdowns
The Brussels Midget girls came
close to clinching a victory against
St. Marys Tuesday, Feb. 14 in first-
round playdowns.
St. Marys opened the scoring in
the first, then Ashley Sholdice made
a precision pass to Michelle Cousins .01 who scored to tie the game. Cousins
then gave Brussels the lead with an

With some 80 enthusiastic curlers
on hand, the days were filled with
lots of good curling and great fun.
There were three draws, with each
team playing two six-end games on
Saturday and returning for brunch
and an eight-end game on Sunday.
In the first draw the Wayne
Waechter rink racked up three wins.
In the second draw the Al Detzler
team from Teeswater went
undefeated to end up on top.
In the third draw or what could be
considered "the Taylor draw" with
no less than four Taylor rinks
entered, the Barry Simpson rink
with wins over Taylor, Simon
Taylor and lastly over Bryce Taylor
went undefeated. With a 50-point
total they walked away with the
trophy edging out the Wayne
Waechter team by a single point.
Members of the winning rink
were Barry and Diane Simpson
with daughter Ainsley Simpson and
Keelan Smith.

Volunteers at the Brussels minor
soccer executive are feeling
overworked.
Five volunteers organize teams,
games and a tournament for over 200
players.
Two of the organizers will be
stepping down this year and the
organization is searching for
replacements.
"We need volunteers so that we
can have a successful season," Rose
Kellington, coach co-ordinator and
scheduler said. "Every year we are
looking for volunteers and every
year people just don't seem to want
to come out."
Kellington said volunteers are
needed in a number of areas
including as coaches, referees, and
lines people as well as to help
organize the season. "The executive
meets three to four times a year," she
said.
Jacquie Waechter, another
organizer said that every volunteer
on the executive also has a full-time
In the Tuesday ladies' action the
Madill girls with skip Leanne
Elston edged Jenn Elston's
foursome 5-4. Other results were
Jennie Hogervorst 5, Mary Moffat 2
and Debbie Gammie with a 5-4 win
over Ann Crawford.

In the Tuesday competitive league
there were two close games and two
rather one-sided games. In the nail
biters Earl Fitch bested Shawn
Cottrill 5; and Don Edgar won over
Aart DeVos by 8-7.
It was a long game for Bill DeVos
as Calvin Ruttan, showed no mercy,
racking up an 11-2 win. Rob
Middleton did likewise with a 9-1
win over Russ Taylor.

In the Wednesday mixed league
the results were: Earl Fitch 8, Dean
Newson 4; John Dailleboust 8,
Steve Burch 5; Aart DeVos 7,

In Friday night action it was W.

job but is still able to find the time.
"Our goal is to give every child in
the area who wants to play soccer the
opportunity to do that," Kellington,
said.
"We can't do that unless we have
volunteers."
The soccer season begins in May
and runs until the end of July. There
is a tournament at the end of the
season and players ages eight to 18
play on teams that travel around the
area.

In action in the Daytime League
on Monday the results were:
Leedham 8, Mann 4; Franks 7,
Shaw 4; Deans 13, Wheeler 0; Alex
Nethery 10, G. McMichael 5; Irving
Elliott 8, R. McMichael 7; B.
Robertston 10, W. Stamper 2.
The game of the day was between
Ivan Dow and Jim Coultes. This had
a seldom seen measuring of rocks
touching the four-foot rings with the
result that both inside and outside of
the rocks, no difference was
observed and it was a blanked end.
Then after eight ends it was a tied
game with Don gaining the win in
the extra end.
For the Thursday scores we are
going to "skip the skips" and list the
teams under the leads on the various
teams: Roy Aitcheson 8, Kevin
Bishop 7; Lillian Campbell 7, K.
Dailleboust 3; B. Simpson 6, Merle
Underwood 4; Evelyn Neilson 5,
Sue Wai 3; Ruth Baxter 9, Byron

Blyth, Wingham, Goderich and
Lucknow," Waechter said.
Registration will take place on
Saturday, March 25.
Kellington said high school
students looking to fill their 40 hours
of community service have
volunteered in the past. "We're
hoping they will return in the future,"
she said.
Anyone interested in helping the
organization can call Abi at the
Brussels Morris Grey Community
Centre at 887-6621.
Raynard finally got Blyth on the
board with two quick goals.
With just over one minute
remaining Wingham added an
insurance goal that resulted in a 4-2
victory for the hosts.
Dustin Treble did a good job
between the pipes to key his team
in the game.
The Brussels Curling Club ended
its second draw.
First place went to the Stew Steiss
rink with 51 points. Members are:
skip Stew Steiss, vice Pauline
Patterson, second Darryl Morrison
and lead Catrina Josling. Other
results were: second place with 37.5
points, skip Mike Alexander, vice
Dona Knight, second Mike Boven
and lead Rhonda Hoegy; third place
with 37 points, skip, John Dorsch,

unassisted goal.
In the third St. Marys tied it again.
Sunday, the Midgets met Wallace
in Brussels. This game did not go so
well for Brussels. The team's only
goal was scored in the second by
Colleen Aitchison, assisted by
Cousins and Cassandra Uyl.
Wallace scored four goals.
Bauer, vice Joyce Alexander, second
Marilyn Jones and lead Laurie
Campbell.
Due to a number of curlers going
to the Scott Tournament of Hearts in
London the bonspiel to be held on
March 4 has been cancelled.
The year-end banquet will be held
on March 25.
