Girls get close in first playdowns The Brussels Midget girls came close to clinching a victory against St. Marys Tuesday, Feb. 14 in first- round playdowns. St. Marys opened the scoring in the first, then Ashley Sholdice made a precision pass to Michelle Cousins .01 who scored to tie the game. Cousins then gave Brussels the lead with an At the target The Sweetheart Mixed Bonspiel at Wingham Curling Club on Feb. 11 and 12 was a huge success. With some 80 enthusiastic curlers on hand, the days were filled with lots of good curling and great fun. There were three draws, with each team playing two six-end games on Saturday and returning for brunch and an eight-end game on Sunday. In the first draw the Wayne Waechter rink racked up three wins. In the second draw the Al Detzler team from Teeswater went undefeated to end up on top. In the third draw or what could be considered "the Taylor draw" with no less than four Taylor rinks entered, the Barry Simpson rink with wins over Taylor, Simon Taylor and lastly over Bryce Taylor went undefeated. With a 50-point total they walked away with the trophy edging out the Wayne Waechter team by a single point. Members of the winning rink were Barry and Diane Simpson with daughter Ainsley Simpson and Keelan Smith. *** By Heather Crawford Citizen staff Volunteers at the Brussels minor soccer executive are feeling overworked. Five volunteers organize teams, games and a tournament for over 200 players. Two of the organizers will be stepping down this year and the organization is searching for replacements. "We need volunteers so that we can have a successful season," Rose Kellington, coach co-ordinator and scheduler said. "Every year we are looking for volunteers and every year people just don't seem to want to come out." Kellington said volunteers are needed in a number of areas including as coaches, referees, and lines people as well as to help organize the season. "The executive meets three to four times a year," she said. Other results were Jennie Hogervorst 5, Mary Moffat 2 and Debbie Gammie with a 5-4 win over Ann Crawford. *** In the Tuesday competitive league there were two close games and two rather one-sided games. In the nail biters Earl Fitch bested Shawn Cottrill 5; and Don Edgar won over Aart DeVos by 8-7. It was a long game for Bill DeVos as Calvin Ruttan, showed no mercy, racking up an 11-2 win. Rob Middleton did likewise with a 9-1 win over Russ Taylor. *** In the Wednesday mixed league the results were: Earl Fitch 8, Dean Newson 4; John Dailleboust 8, Steve Burch 5; Aart DeVos 7, Leanne Elston 6; and Tammy Adams 8, Shawn Cottrill 4. *** In Friday night action it was W. Horton 11, W. Waechter 5; Lynn Hickey 5, Barry Simpson 3 and job but is still able to find the time. "Our goal is to give every child in the area who wants to play soccer the opportunity to do that," Kellington, said. "We can't do that unless we have volunteers." The soccer season begins in May and runs until the end of July. There is a tournament at the end of the season and players ages eight to 18 play on teams that travel around the area. "They play in Clinton, Seaforth, The Blyth Novices took on Wingham away Feb. 12. The team allowed two goals against them in the first period to give Wingham an early lead. This had a seldom seen measuring of rocks touching the four-foot rings with the result that both inside and outside of the rocks, no difference was observed and it was a blanked end. Then after eight ends it was a tied game with Don gaining the win in the extra end. Kellington said high school students looking to fill their 40 hours of community service have volunteered in the past. "We're hoping they will return in the future," she said. With just over one minute remaining Wingham added an insurance goal that resulted in a 4-2 victory for the hosts. Dustin Treble did a good job between the pipes to key his team in the game. The Brussels Curling Club ended its second draw. First place went to the Stew Steiss rink with 51 points. Members are: skip Stew Steiss, vice Pauline Patterson, second Darryl Morrison and lead Catrina Josling. Other results were: second place with 37.5 points, skip Mike Alexander, vice Dona Knight, second Mike Boven and lead Rhonda Hoegy; third place with 37 points, skip, John Dorsch, vice Jo-Ann McDonald, second Jeff Cardiff and lead Lori Vader; fourth place with 36.5 points, skip Mervyn unassisted goal. In the third St. Marys tied it again. Sunday, the Midgets met Wallace in Brussels. This game did not go so well for Brussels. The team's only goal was scored in the second by Colleen Aitchison, assisted by Cousins and Cassandra Uyl. Wallace scored four goals. Bauer, vice Joyce Alexander, second Marilyn Jones and lead Laurie Campbell. Due to a number of curlers going to the Scott Tournament of Hearts in London the bonspiel to be held on March 4 has been cancelled. The year-end banquet will be held on March 25. BUY? SELL?
