Entertainment Leisure Sumsion Trio to perform at Brussels By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor Popular country entertainer Terry Sumsion and his self-named trio will be bringing their brand of down- home music to Brussels. The group is scheduled to appear at Brussels United Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19 for a fundraiser. "We've been doing these shows at smalltown churches for awhile now," said Sumsion. "It started with a Baptist Church in Drumbo. They were struggling to put new windows in and asked if we could help." Over a period of six to eight months they performed three concerts there. Most recently the trio was in For the month of February, local photographic artist Flo Dyck is presenting an exhibition of original digital fine art, through the Goderich Co-op Gallery. Located in a studio near Seaforth, Dyck has been offering her services as a high-end portrait photographer for the past decade. She has focused recently on creating images of children at play, using costumes and props from the past. Two young girls whispering over tea, dressed in hats and gloves, evokes a feeling of an ethereal and magical time in a woman's life. The photographic image, finished with a digital effect" similar to a Van Gogh painting, produces a canvas entitled, Shared Secrets. Two boys dressed in overalls and bare chests with straw hats to block the sun, fish the day away at March break is just around the corner and keeping the kids busy can be challenging at times. The Wingham Library is hosting a number of events through the week, beginning the evening of March 14. From 7-8 p.m. that day professional photographer David Allen will be presenting a slide show designed to educate, stimulate and entertain. Joseph Schneider Haus is launching its 25th anniversary year as a community museum on Heritage Weekend, Feb, 18, 19 and 20. A special exhibition revisits the fascinating and controversial restoration of the historic Haus which in 1980/81 was the talk of the town. You'll learn all the details of this `'extreme makeover" which won a coveted Heritage Canada Award. Noted local historian, Dr. Ken McLaughlin will reveal all when the exhibit officially opens Sunday at 2 p.m. Feb. 19. Restoration curator Susan Burke will also deliver a brief illustrated talk on "This Old Haus" and the skilled' work of the architects and craftspeople that turned back its personal clock to the year 1856. And in the "old Haus", itself, costumed staff will engage visitors with hospitality and conversation all Gorrie. "We put that show together in just over two weeks and they had 300 people there. It was a really great night." Sumsion describes the shows as a performance of "good positive material. It's just to get people out. People are going so fast they don't have time to wave at their neighbour. This is a pretty neat thing." Sumsion has been performing his brand of country for decades touring with the likes of Randy Travis, Merle Haggard, George Jones, the Oak Ridge Boys and Loretta Lynn among others. He has gamed over 10 top 40 hits including So Hard To Forget, Brand New Love Affair and Our Lovin' Place. The album of the same name as the latter was nominated for Grandpa's fishing hole, awakening the look and feel of a Mark Twain scene, bathed in warm golds with a watercolour finish (Grandpa's Fishing Hole). Both images are samples of what she has created and are on display during the exhibition. • Flo Dyck has been awarded a Merit award from the Professional Photographers of Ontario and has hung in the national exhibition of the Professional Photographers of Canada. Her work has been exhibited at the recent Business As Usual — Huron County at Work exhibit, sponsored by the Huron District_ Labour Council. She was awarded the People's Choice for the exhibition, which can be found in the Wingham Library for February and at the Seaforth Cost for the event, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Library is $2 per child or $5 per family. I may not achieve what I want in the first few attempts but the vision keeps me going until I am satisfied: And if other people -enjoy my work, then my efforts are rewarded. I honour and uplift what I am capturing. That's what a good artist wants to do." From 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. that day it's Rock on Kids. Children between the ages of eight to 12 can design and paint their own pet rocks. Cost is $1 and registration is required. Registration is also required for the Funky Container Maker event on Thursday, March 16. Cost for this is $1. Children aged eight to 12 are invited to come create a masterpiece to hold their small treasures. The time is 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Friday at 10:30 it's the Early Years program Story Fun for children up to six.
