From the Minister's Study
Jesus a place of rest for the weary, says pastor
Rev. Dave Wood
Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church, Auburn
Trials bring growth. Pressure can
either break us or make us and
adversity helps develop
perseverance and character.
I should know because I have had
my fair share, not to mention a
neighbour as an extremely colourful
example! .
These little delights in life called
trials (tongue in cheek) come in all
shapes and sizes and they often
come when you least expect them.
But this we can be sure of, they
will come and they continue to be
part of our lives. We can either
embrace these trials and learn from
them, or we can go under and
allow their weight to incapacitate
us.
Sadly, there are many who are
going under in our society and the
effects of stress and depression are
widespread. The demands of life, the
expectations of others and the basic
needs within all combine to place a
load upon the individual.
With all the snow we have had
recently I am thankful that the
building codes are such that roofs
have to be built to withstand these
loads. In the same way, God has
designed each of us to withstand the
loads that life heaps on us.
But as it is with the weight of
snow, if it increases and increases,
the roof will collapse, so it can be in
our situations of life. We can only
endure so much on our own.
This is why Jesus tells us to come
to Him, to all the weary and heavy-
laden, all those who keep getting
dumped on, to simply come to Him
and cast your burden upon Him and
He promises He will give you
rest.
The hard part is to come. I know
this to be true. To admit the weight is
getting to you and let Jesus shoulder
some of the burden. In this life
we often carry what need not be
carried.
Jesus said that the best thing for us
is to take His yoke, His teaching,
upon us and so learn from Him for
He is gentle and humble of heart and
we will find rest for our souls.
Such is the invitation to each one
of us and we need not wait until the
trial comes because the invitation is
open even now. If life is getting you
down, if the pressures are causing
some cracks, don't wait until you
break!
Ask Jesus to shoulder the burden
and as B.J. Thomas sings, "If He
carried the weight of the world upon
His shoulders, I know my brother
that He can carry you. If He carried
the weight of the world upon His
shoulders, I know my sister that He
will see you through."
Jesus is a place of rest for the
weary!
