Girls in Silver Stick
The Saugeen Maitland AA
Midget Lightning travelled to Sarnia
on the weekend to participate in the
Girls Silver Stick hockey
tournament. The girls faced some
tough competition but managed to
advance to the semi-finals where
they lost a close one 3-2.
The first game of the weekend
was Friday morning when the girls
played Brampton, but unfortunately,
the morning car ride was not what
the team needed to warm up. They
did not provide much defence, nor
did they provide enough offence as
.they lost 3-1.
Courtney Sutherland scored the
lone goal on a pass from Carmen
Carnochan. Defence player, Jenny
Bults was the MVP for the
Lightning.
Friday night, the girls came to
play as they outshot North York 48 -
7 and won 3-0. Janette Hammell
was the first go get one by the red
hot goalie, assisted by Courtney
Sutherland. Stacey Scholten
connected on a pass from Michelle
Kittel to make it 2-0, then Scholten
returned the favour and Kittel
dumped the third goal in the net.
Scholten won MVP Cassy
Stafford earned the shutout.
The girls, were ready again by
Saturday at noon when they
defeated Whitby 3-1. Kendall
Whitfield opened the scoring on a
pass from Allison Quennell, then
Kittel completed a play to score on a
pass from Scholten. Whitfield
scored her second of the game when
the Lightning MVP. Michelle Kittel
passed the puck to her.
The victory was what the
Lightning netted to advance to the
quarter-finals against Cobourg.
The Cobourg team was a big,
physical team, but the Saugeen
Maitland girls were able to keep up
with them shift after shift.
After regulation time had expired
Atom Girls
The Blyth Atom girls hockey team
has been very successful during the
opening weeks of this month.
Feb. 4, Blyth played host to
Saugeen Shores. The visitors applied
pressure and scored early. Halfway
through the first Kayla Dale opened
the scoring for the home team with
an assist by Lexi Smith. Later that
same period Shelsie Popp scored an
unassisted goal.
Jordan Teed, Nicole Middegaal
and Kesley Kerr worked hard and
kept the pressure on. Blyth came out
fighting in the third and scored four
goals. Popp found the net on a pass
from Dale. Four minutes later Popp
scored her hattrick unassisted. Laura
Higgins made a rush from defence to
also score on an unassisted effort.
Midget Girls
On Sunday, Feb. 12 the Brussels
Midget girls met Wingham in
Brussels for their first playoff game.
The pace was quick right from the
beginning and the action was good.
Wingham opened the scoring in the
first then scored again in the second.
Brussels narrowed the gap in the
third on an unassisted goal from
Kristen McArter.
The Brussels girls had some good
rushing attempts, but could not get
one into the net.
The final score was 2-1 for
Wingham.
The next game was in St. Marys
it was a scoreless tie. Then the
Maitland continued to roll forward.
After two-and-a-half minutes into
the first overtime period, Janette
Hammell won the faceoff deep in
the Lightning end. Jenny Bults
picked up the puck, passed it along
the boards to Chantelle
Eckenswiller who gave it back to
Hammell, who slid it forward to
Sutherland on the break-away.
Sutherland deked the goalie, and put
it in the net to win.the game.
Stafford was able to keep the net
clean for her second shutout of the
weekend. Sutherland was the game
MVP for the Lightning.
The semi-final game was played
Sunday morning. The Lightning
found themselves in a hole by the
end of the first period as the
Markham-Stouville I team notched
two quick goals.
However, the Saugeen team
roared back with two goals of their
own to tie it. Ali McNaulty scored a
beauty goal from the point on a pass
from. Hammell, then Erin Burns
scored the opposite point on a pass
from Quennell.
Unfortunately the Markham team
was able to score one more goal.
Despite the fact the Lightning
outshot Markham 24-14, they were
unable to get another one over the
goal line. As a result, the Lightning
were unable to advance to the
championship game against
Clearview.
In that final game, Markham-
Stouville defeated Clearview 7-0 to
win the Silver Stick tournament.
Coaches Bill Weber and Joe
Chaffe, along with trainer Barb
Dale, were as disappointed as the
girls, not to have the opportunity to
play in the finals, but look forward
to the next series when the
Lightning will begin their provincial
playdowns next week against
Stratford and Waterloo.

With a minute in the game Rebecca
Chalmers put the rubber in the net.
Saugeen Shores would get another

Blyth.
On Feb. 11, Blyth travelled to
Elma Logan. The home team opened
the scoring in the first.
Blyth would not be left scoreless
as Popp scored unassisted 28
seconds 'later, her first of three.

goals. Other goals went to Chalmers,

Courtney Middegaal. Assists were
awarded to Dale and Mackenzie
McGavin.

Minto on Saturday afternoon in
overtime to advance to the WOAA
finals.
Trailing 1-0 in the second period
Xavier O'Krafka set Cory
MacDonald up for a short-handed
goal. Minto would regain the lead
before the end of the frame.
T.J. Marks would tie it early into
the third with help from MacDonald.
The score remained unchanged
throughout the rest of the period to
force overtime.
Minutes into the extra frame

bury the game winner sealing a 3-2
Wingham win and a 3-1 series win.

strong play making many key saves
in the victory.
