Big plans in place for Brussels parkland
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
There are big plans in the works
for the conservation park in
Brussels.
The Optimist Club has been
seeking support for a project that
would encourage greater
recreational use of the park, as well
as improving its safety and
accessibility.
When Watford residents visited
Brussels last April as part of an
Ontario First Impressions
Community Exchange pilot project
one featured of Brussels stood out.
"Those people indicated we were
missing the boat when it came to the
potential for the river and parkland,"
said Optimist Jeff Newell. "So
we're acting on that. If it's our jewel,
then let's do something about it"
What the Club is planning is to
resurface the access from the mill to
the edge of the dam and construct a
boat ramp from rough concrete.
"That barrier that's currently there,
that people are fotced to walk
around, will be gone," said Optimist
Gerry Wheeler. "We are trying to
make the park easier for everyone to
use."
To that end there will be surfaced
trails through the park for walking
and cycling.
"The number one recreational
activity is walking," said Newell.
"With this then we want to make

sure that everyone can walk there,
whether they have a wheelchair or a
stroller."
In safety improvements the Club
has planned to replace the existing
railing at the dam and increase
lighting in the park area.
To attract people to the park,
gardens will be added and a new
picnic pavilion with a washroom
will be constructed. This will be
located to the north of the existing
shelter which will remain.
"Currently no one uses the park
because there are no washrooms.
With this building plus the pavillion
people will be able to hold large
family gatherings there," said
Wheeler.
That support is a benefit in
attracting a Trillium grant which the
Club is currently pursuing. The
application must be submitted by
March 1 and it will be three to six
months before they know if they
have received the funds.
"We can't begin anything until we
hear from them, so how the project
progresses will depend on when and
if we get the money," said Wheeler.
Quotes are presently being
obrtained for the cementing, railing,
pathways, lighting and the building.
"We decided to really go for the
gusto with this, and if we have to
scale back we'll do that, but we
might as well look at it all now,"
Wheeler said.
A project of this magnitude can't

happen without the support of
community. Wheeler said that they
have received tremendous support
from those they have approached
thus far. The Horticultural Society
has committed its support for the
gardens, while the WI has also
promised some kind of contribution.
The Municipality of Huron East
has agreed to an 'in-kind'
contribution, while the Lions have
also offered support.
"Basically everyone is behind
this," Wheeler said.
All proceeds from the Optimists
April fundraising auction event will
be going to the project, Wheeler
said. "You know, we get these
projects started, but it's the people
who support us that make it happen."
"Everyone has always supported
us well," said Wheeler. "This is
coming together well and it's going
to be a great community project."
