Help create book to honour county's veterans
By Sarah Mann
Focus News Magazine
A book about Second 'World War
veterans is being put together and
organizer Jim Rutledge is asking for
the public's help.
"I'd love to talk to any veterans or
children of veterans who are
interested in sharing their stories,
photos and letters," he said.
The book, with the working title
The Men and Women of Honour,
will be about area veterans who
didn't come home, as well as those
who came home and have since
passed away or are still alive.
"We know it's going to be three or
more years until everything is
together, but the priority right now is
to speak with the boys who are still
alive," he said. "I spent two and-a-
half hours with Bob Leckie this
morning. What stories he has."
Upon completion, the book will
provide background information,
military histories and stories.
On Jan. 11, a county-wide public
meeting was held at the Huron
County Museum in Goderich with
25 people from Bayfield, Wingham,
Blyth, Crediton, Exeter, Clinton,
Goderich and Seaforth in
attendance.
THE EDITOR,
In my experience, being the only
female candidate in this past
election, women are not truly
respected in politics in this riding.
One of the candidates was
patronizing, which can cause
women to feel like second-class
citizens. Two candidates felt they
could interrupt me and talk
excessively, and would dominate the
debate disrespectfully.
One of the candidates would
always say that women should stay
home with their children. This' is
blatantly rude.
I hope that in the future, more

"It went well," Rutledge said.
"Considering we were competing
with the (all-candidates meeting). I
saw about 15 people who said they
would have come but went to that
instead. And I understand that."
And interest hasn't stopped.
"I get phone calls and e-mails
every day," he said.
In a letter sent out to various
publications, churches and Legions,
Rutledge said, "It is our desire that
future generations will better
understand and appreciate our men
and women of honour."
A committee was formed at the
last meeting to apply for financial
assistance. The small committee
consists of two teachers and two
members of the recent Veteran's
Celebration Committee.
"We are hopeful that a Legion,
historical society or museum will
work with us and be a partner and
act as a sponsor should we be
successful in obtaining funds," the
letter read.
As the project continues, another
committee will be formed to provide
guidance on what should be placed
in the book and what sort of format
should be followed.
It was Rutledge's father who, in
essence, provoked him to start the
women can be involved in politics,
for we need to ensure that we were
treated respectfully without being
patronized, interrupted, or belittled.
I could hardly believe the
prejudiced and derogatory
comments I heard from some of the
candidates.
We need more women involved in
the community, and more men who
are willing to ensure the equal
treatment of women in the political
arena.

"My dad was in the air force and
my mom always said he came back a
different person. He didn't talk about
what happened, he wasn't as
affectionate, he was just a different
person," Rutledge said.
"And then he died, and I started to
follow him and what he did when he
was in the air force. I'm much closer
to him now than when he was alive."
Rutledge said a lot of veterans
have certain experiences they can't,
or don't want to talk about, and
that's OK.

involves.
Huron East councillor Bernie
MacLellan said he felt that even with
the new money, the county should
plan for a three per cent tax rate
increase to keep up with inflation.
Warden Rob Morley reminded
council that it would take a 3.5 per
cent increase just to cover fixed costs.
As well, the initial proposals from
senior staff had been for a larger
budget increase.
If the provincial money is to be
ongoing perhaps those original
requests need to be re-examined, he
suggested.
"This is the• reason for
recommending a deferral (of budget
approval)" Morley said. "Two' weeks
(delay) won't set the county back on
its heels."
Whether-the funding is long-term or
not, "I would assume we have
nowhere to go but down (with the tax
