(Heather Crawford photo) Joan James of Brussels knows how to keep busy. The owner of a hobby farm that includes eight cats, four dogs, four sheep, one pig, one pot-belly pig, rabbits, chickens, goats, a turkey, a horse, a donkey, cows, geese, doves, budgies, and hamsters, somehow has spare time on her hands. James spends that time making crafts. For the past three years she has been teaching herself how to create painted, decorative rocks. "I've always painted but I learned about some of the more detailed designs from a book or a calendar," she said. "I've always been into By Heather Crawford Citizen staff crafts and I thought this would be something different." The rocks have intricate designs, mostly of animals and have been sold to put in gardens, as doorstops or merely for decoration. "Sometimes someone will see something they like and ask me to paint something that looks like their cat or dog," she said. Painting one rock can take a whole day, and is often time con- suming. "But I just do it to pass the time as a hobby at home." James said her two children help out by bringing her stones that they find and helping her move the rocks. "They can get pretty heavy," she said. So far James has sold her work at several craft shows and fairs includ- ing the Belmore Maple Syrup Festival and at Fern Feathers Animal Sale in Mount Forest. "I also make signs for people," she said "as well as sweaters for dogs and Christmas tree ornaments." She estimates that she has sold over 100 stones to date. The price range of rocks is between $4 and $30 for a set of three. She is aware that these rocks could be sold for a much higher price and has been told so several times. "I just do it for fun. I want to sell them so that I can make room for more." Anyone interested in seeing the stones for themselves can call 887- 6211.
