It was a knock down, drag out battle, but a successful one
for the Blyth Atom Local League when they hosted

The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
AA girls team skated to a 0-0 tie with
the Sarnia Sting on Saturday in
Sarnia.
The Lightning dominated the first
two periods but were unable to get
one past the goalie.
The third period was busier for the
Lightning goalie, Syd Brown, as the
Sting applied the pressure. However,
Brown was able to turn away all the
shots, and earned the shutout.
The girls will play the last game of
the regular season next Saturday in
Howick against Kitchener. The two
teams are battling for first place in
the west division of the Metro
Toronto Girls Hockey League.
Weather conditions cancelled the
Ladies Tuesday night and
Wednesday night curling sessions
last week.

Despite the weather, the Tuesday
competitive teams were out in full
force. But from the scores it is quite
evident that some teams were hot
and some teams were not as all
games were rather one sided. Both
DeVos brothers were matching
each other as Aart DeVos downed
Shawn Cottrill 10-3 and Bill DeVos
upset Russ Taylor to the tune of 12-
4.
Earl Fitch showed no mercy as he
drowned Don Edgar 10-3 and
Calvin Ruttan beat Rob Middleton
10-1.

Can any other team top this? In
the daytime curling league there is
one team rather hard to beat when it
comes to age. This team is made up
of the three oldest curlers in the
league — all over 85 years of age.
The three seniors are Jim Coultes,
skip, John Neilson, second and
Clayton Ruppel, lead. Add to this
three — vice Arnold Taylor and you
come up with a team average of 82
years and they can curl too.
Just last Thursday they came up
with an extra end win.
Bet this average age for a team is
a record — in Ontario and perhaps.

The country men's bonspiel on
Saturday was a hugh success with a
full field of 16 teams. /
In the 9 a.m. draw Calvin
