(Bonnie Gropp photo) Huron Library gets $ 15,000 grant The Huron County Library collection of audiovisual and large print materials will be significantly expanded in 2004 thanks to an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant for $15,000. Materials purchased with the grant will include large print and braille books and all types of audiovisual materials: audiobooks on cassette and CD, closed captioned video, DVD, and music CDs. The expanded audiovisual collection will increase the materials available to anyone who is print challenged. Patrons who find print difficult' {o- use due to visual or perceptual problems will find a greater selection of audiobooks and large print titles on library shelves. Patrons with hearing disabilities will find more closed captioned and descriptive videos and DVDs. While this collection will be of special interest to hearing or visually challenged library patrons, most of these items can be enjoyed by everyone, since there won’t be any restrictions on who uses these materials. For example, many commuters enjoy listening to audiobooks while driving to work. Materials are already on order and library patrons should see a significant improvement in the collections at their local branch early in the new year. The library catalogue lists all materials in the Huron County Library system and interlibrary loan can be used to request titles from other branches. Anyone wishing to borrow something from another branch, can have it delivered to their local branch, or any branch of their choice. They may also return it to any branch they find convenient. Selection is never restricted to what happens to be on the shelves of the local branch on a given day. A few items are not available for interbranch loan such as some high- circulating videos and DVD collections, due to high demand and small collection size. If an item is available at a branch, but is currently out on loan, ask the library staff to place a hold on the item. Once it is returned, library staff will set it aside, and phone when it is waiting for pickup. The Huron County Library is pleased to be involved in this partnership with the Ontario Trillium Foundation in order to improve the service we provide to the residents of Huron County. The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Ministry of Culture of the Ontario Government. Trillium Foundation funds are generated through Ontario’s charity casino initiative.
