Testament emphasizes lhe wa\ 111
which Jesus identifies with us in our
(sometimes hurtful) human condition,
so that wc could be really helped: “It
was necessary for Jesus lo be in every
respect like us. his brothers and
sisters, so that he could be our
merciful and faithful High Priest
before God. He then could offer a
sacrifice that would lake away lhe
sins of the people. Since he himself
has gone through suffering and
temptation, he is able lo help us when
we are being templed.” (Hebrews
2:17f)
Barbara Robinson’s story not only
offers a reality check on the notions
we may have developed of the
manger scene. It also challenges us to
examine our response to the Nowell,
the news that a Saviour is born to us.

What do we bring to the manger? Is
it just pretty ornaments of no real
value, or does Jesus's advent prompt
us to be daringly generous to those
outside our own immediate circle?
And there are few things more
personally satisfying than sending
some money anonymously io people
you know of who are struggling
financially.
When the good news about Jesus
really grabs us. we will be changed -
in attitude and action. May you
discover a way to get a reality check
this Christmas; may its true
significance “come over you all at
once” — with better results! Have a
Happy Herdman Christmas!
