Obituaries
DAVID WALKER MILLER
David Walker Miller of the Ward
of Morris, and formerly of Stratford,
passed away at Wingham and
District Hospital on Thursday, Dec.
11, 2003. Bom in Morris Twp. on
Feb. 16, 1915, David was in his 89th
year.
David attended SS No. 4 Morris.
He apprenticed with D.A. Rann
Funeral Services, Brussels and
received his Funeral Directors
Licence from the Banting Institute in
1936, working for D.A. Rann until
1938. then the S.T. Walker Funeral
Home in Timmins in 1939. David
then worked for the Hollinger Gold
Mine until 1944, in between
working construction jobs on the
Alaskan Highway.
In 1944, he joined the Royal
Canadian Army. Upon the end of the
war, David worked for various
mining companies in Labrador and
Quebec until his retirement in 1980
when he decided to reside in
Stratford.
David's involvement in service
organizations was as follows:
Western Star Lodge No. 149 IOOF
from 1937 to 1939 and from 1982 to
the time of his passing; Timmins
IOOF from 1939-82; Avon Lodge
No. 41 IOOF; Past Member
Mapleton Encampment No. 12,
Royal Canadian Legion member
Timmins. Sept Isles, Labrador City,
58 year member at the time of his
passing; charter member and past
master of Seven Builders Lodge No.
127 AF & AM GRQ and Northern
Light Lodge No. 8082 AF & AM
GRQ Wabash City, Labrador;
Quebec Lodge of Perfection and
Rose Croix, Quebec City; past
president Sept Isles Shrine Club;
member of Avon Shrine Club and
past master of St. John’s Lodge No.
284 Brussels; Past Grand Stewart of
the Grand Lodge of Quebec; charter
member of Sept Isle Lions Club;
past president of the Sept Isle
Curling Club, the Labrador- City
Curling Club; member of Avon
Curling Club; past president of the
Stratford District Short Mat Bowling
Club, member of the Stratford
Geneology Society and a past
Chairman of the Greater Sept Isle
Protestant School Board.
David was the beloved husband of
the late Dorothy Huether. He was the
dear father of Dr. Linda Douglas of
Woodstock and James David Miller
of Toronto. He was the dear
grandfather of Mark Kirkby of
Wingham and Steven Kirkby of
Vancouver and great-grandfather to
Alena, Lexi Rose, Hunter, and
Tanner. He was the dear brother of
Mona Tunney of Teeswater.
David was predeceased by
brothers Tom and Jack and two
infant children.
Friends were received from 2-4
and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the
Schimanski Family Funeral Home,
Brussels, where the funeral service
was held Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m.
with Rev. Joan Golden officiating.
Spring interment will be in
Brussels Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made
to the Brussels United Church.
Legion (Brussels Legion No. 218).
Oddfellow (Western Star Lodge No.
149) and Masonic (St. John’s Lodge
No. 284) services were held at the
funeral home Friday evening
beginning at 9 p.m.
GEORGE PEARSON
George Thompson Pearson of
Listowel. and formerly of Ethel,
passed away at Listowel Memorial
Hospital on Monday, Dec. 15, 2003.
Born in Grey Twp. on Oct. 29, 1917,
George was in his 87th year. He was
the son of Joseph Pearson and Annie
Brown.
George was the beloved husband
of Isabel (Cardiff) Pearson and dear
father of Robert Pearson and his
wife Theresa of Toronto, Jeanne
Fischer and her husband Don of
Listowel, Donald Pearson and his
wife Cathy of London and Bill
Pearson and his wife Brenda of
Ethel. He was the dear brother of
Jean Elliot and her husband Burt of
Chatsworth, and Helen Swift and her
husband Don of London. He was
also loved by his grandchildren
Laurie (Fischer) and Dwayne
Raynard, Steven Fischer and Cheryl
Dobson, Tom, Joe, Michael and Ian
Pearson, David and Tara Pearson,
and great-grandchildren Alexandra,
Joshua and Emma Raynard. George
was the dear brother-in-law of Jack
and Audrey Cardiff, Karen Cardiff,
Jean Wolfe and Barb Cardiff. He
was predeceased by Jim and Jerry
Cardiff and Bob Wolfe.
George farmed on Cone. 4 and
Cone. 8 of Grey Twp. and had a
hardware store in Ethel from 1947 to
1957. He was an elder of Ethel
United Church, a member of the
church choir for 63 years, and
secretary of Mount Pleasant
Cemetery. George was a member of
the Grey Twp. Fire Department. He
sang in several quartets and was in
the Atwood Men’s Chorus and home
and school plays. He was a chairman
of Grey Twp. School Board, a 50-
year member of IOOF and worked at
the Brussels Sales Barn for over 30
years.
Friends were received by the
family at the Schimanski Family
Funeral Home, Brussels from 7 - 9
Tuesday, Dec. 16 and from 2 - 4 and
7-9 Wednesday. The funeral service
was conducted from Ethel United
Church on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 2
p.m. by Joan Golden and Rev.
George Russell.
Mrs. Susan Alexander was
organist.
George’s son Bill gave a
remembrance of his father, and
daughter-in-law Theresa Tova-
Pearson sang Amazing Grace as a
tribute to George. The hymns were
O Lord My God, Unto the Hills and
Blest Be the Tie that Binds.
An Oddfellows service was held
on Wednesday evening.
Pallbearers were grandsons Steven
Fischer, Tom, Joe, Michael, Ian and
David Pearson, and Dwayne
Raynard.
Flowerbearers were Laurie,
Alexandra and Joshua Raynard and
Tara Pearson.
Interment was in Mount Pleasant
Cemetery, Ethel.
MRS. GRACE (VAN OENEN)
LUBBERS

Mrs. Grace (Van Oenen) Lubbers
of Auburn passed away peacefully al
her residence on Sunday, Dec. 21,
2003. She was in her 79th year.
Mrs. Lubbers was born in the
Netherlands on May 11, 1925 and
was the daughter of the late Gerrit
and Willemina (deGraaf) Van
Oenen.
She was the beloved wife of Ralph
Lubbers and loving mother of Roely
and Tony Verburg of Auburn,
George and Cathy Lubbers of
Bradford, Henry and Jean Lubbers
of Clinton and Andy Lubbers of
Auburn. She was also loved and will
be sadly missed by 13 grandchildren
and eight grandchildren. She was the
dear sister of Kaatja and Jans
Oosting and Jan Van Oenen, all of
the Netherlands.
Mrs. Lubbers was predeceased by
sister Annechien and by brothers
Gerrit, Jan, Andries and Jantinus.
Friends were received at the Blyth
Visitation Centre of the Falconer
Funeral Homes, 407 Queen St..
Blyth on Monday from 2 - 4 and 7 -
9 p.m. Funeral service was held at
the Blyth Christian Reformed
Church on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 1:30
p.m.
Spring interment will be in Hope
Chapel Cemetery, Hullett.
As expressions of sympathy
memorial donations to the Hope
Centre (Toronto Mission) would be
greatly appreciated.
