Douma greets ANNE EXEL Anne Exel of Brussels passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003. Bom in the Netherlands on May 11, 1946, Anne was in her 58th year. She was the dear friend of Lisa Glanville and dear mother of Michelle Richmond and her husband Darren of Blyth and Michael Vader and his wife Lori of Brussels. She was the dear sister of Henry and Margaret Exel of Brussels, Everdina and Kenneth Bender of Listowel, Eric and Nikki Exel of Lucknow, Ada and Hank Haasnoot of Fordwich, Gerda and Randy Roppel of Tiverton, Charles Exel of Ottawa and Frances Exel and Gary Bergstra of Shallow Lake. Anne was also loved by her four grandchildren, 20 nieces and nephews and 30 grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents Gerald and Gerrie Exel. Friends were received by the family from 2-4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Thursday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Brussels which was followed by a Legion service under the auspices of Brussels Legion No. 218 RCL. The funeral service was conducted from Melville Presbyterian Church, Brussels, on Friday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cathrine Campbell officiating and Malinda Exel as organist. The hymns were The Old Rugged Cross, Jesus Loves Me, Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art. Remembrances of Anne were given by her sister Ada Haasnoot and daughter-in-law Lori Vader. Carrying floral tributes were Gerry Exel, David Exel, Darryl Bender, Warren Haasnoot and Paul Rop­ pel. Pallbearers were Lyle Hood, John Harrington, Jim Brown, Rick McDonald, Ken Graber and Chris Cooper. Cremation followed with interment of cremated remains in Brussels Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Brussels Legion No. 218 or Melville Presbyterian Church. JAMES MICHAEL DOHERTY James Michael Doherty passed away on Friday. Dec. 5 in Goderich Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in his 77th year. He spent his early years in Blyth, moved to Kingsbridge and then settled in Port Albert. Left to mourn his passing are three sisters. Rita (Jack Tigert), Mary (John Maize) and Anne Berry, sister- in-law, Anne Doherty, half-sister Sarah O’Mullan of Ireland; three brothers, Clarence (Loretta), Frank (Isabelle) and Stan Doherty. Mr. Doherty is survived as well by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, the former Mary Kelly of Blyth and James Doherty of Ireland; brother John, sister-in-law Betty, brother-in-law Bill Berry and half- sister, Mary Catherine Rankin of Ireland. The funeral mass was held on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church. Kingsbridge. Interment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Services were well attended at Melville Presbyterian Church last Sunday morning. Greeting at the door was Maurice Douma. The second Advent candle was lit by Janna Dodds, Rachael Speers and Eliza Dodds. The flowers at the front of the church were placed there in loving memory of Anne Exel by Mike and Lori Vader, Michelle and Darren Richmond and the Exel family. Many friends and family members joined the congregation for the baptisms of Nolan John, son of Holly and Steve McCutcheon, and Tyler Murray, son of Kara and Brian McNichol. Rev Cathrine Campbell conducted the baptisms with the assistance of elders Jim Armstrong and Jeff Cardiff. The junior choir sang the anthem. The Calypso Carol. Following this ceremony, the children of the church gathered up the mittens that had been brought and fastened them on the mitten tree Rink building in Ethel, Sat. Continued from page 14 the group. Ethel Community Christmas Celebration will be held on Thursday, Dec. 18. The hayride for carolling leaves the Ethel Hall at 7 p.m. The Hall will be open for refreshments, music and visiting from 7-9 p.m. Don’t forget to bring donations to for distribution to the needy in Huron County. “Mittens are a symbol of warmth and it is a gift that makes one feel special”, said Rev. Campbell. “These are gifts from the people of Melville following the example of Jesus who gave us so many things”. Responsive reading was Psalm 98. Rev. Campbell then gave the scripture lesson of Malachi 3:1- 4; Philippians 1:3- II; and Luke 3:1- 6 with assistance from reader Emily Cardiff. In the sermon, I Can See Clearly Now... , Rev. Campbell reviewed the imagery of purity referred to in our scripture readings. Defined as singleness of purpose, purity is difficult to achieve with the distractions of our busy modern lives. From the stern restraints of our ancestors the pendulum has swung far the other way, and people now look for direction. John the Baptist from the desert came preaching the hall for the Salvation Army. Thursday afternoon Bible study is on the book of Matthew hosted by Helen Elliott at 2 p.m. On Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. the Sunday school concert will take place in the church. Everyone is welcome to join these events. On Friday, Dec. 12 at 12 p.m. there is a free Community Lunch. This is outreach at this time of year. Any donations go to the tower fund.
