(Eiyse DeBruyn pnoM County council briefs Ambulance service motion defeated A motion to extend temporary additional ambulance service in the lakeshore area south of Goderich was defeated by the county's committee of the whole and confirmed by county council Nov. 26. A delegation from the area had attended the Nov. 18 committee meeting to ask for an extension of the service beyond the Nov. 15 date to which the county had earlier extended the summer service Treasurer David Carey had informed the committee it had already cost $27,000 for the earlier one-month extension of the service with no additional funding from the province. Extending the service longer could put the county into a deficit, he said. A motion to extend the service had been defeated 9-6. *** The telephone system at the health and library complex south of Clinton crashed on Nov. 13 and will have to be replaced. The system was installed in 1995 and had exceeded its life expectancy of five to seven years. A similar system was also installed at the courthouse at that time and also must be replaced because it is at capacity. The breakdown does provide the opportunity to purchase a system that offers many more features. Preliminary discussions have taken place with suppliers with estimated costs ranging from $60,()()() to $ lOO.OOO. The number of people receiving assistance under the Ontario Works program continues to drop. In September there were 3.4 per cent fewer cases with .29 per cent fewer beneficiaries than in August and year-over-year declines were 8.59 per cent fewer cases and 3.5 per cent fewer beneficiaries than a year earlier. *** You'Ll soon be seeing signs advertising Crime Stoppers on county road signs as well as the current Road Watch signs. Crime Stoppers officials appeared before the agriculture, public works and seniors committee on Nov. 12 and received support tor the installation of signs .on the same posts as Road Watch signs. County council confirmed that decision Nov. 26.*** The agriculture, public works and seniors committee also called for more research into the need, size and type of generators required for backup power at county ambulance stations.
