Inside the walls of Jerusalem
FROM BRUSSELS
Water off
again
A problem with the diesel
generator switching on caused many
Brussels residences to be without
water for yet another period of time
on Nov. 26.
Jack McLachlan. clerk
administrator for the Municipality of
Huron East, said a faulty sensor
caused the problem, but it has been
fixed.
He said Brussels had to be put on
the boil water advisory because of
low pressure in the watermain. The
advisory was lifted last Friday.

This is World AIDS Day, as I’m
putting thoughts to paper on this
bright snowy Monday. We have lots
of designated days and this one
needs to be taken seriously.
I can remember in the 1980s when
Dr. Long spoke to the Callander
Nursing Home staff about this new
disease. It brought lots of questions
and fears but he reassured us that
safety and precautions were our
defence. His advice still serves us
well. As this disease continues to
spread in Huron County and
worldwide we need to add increased
and current knowledge as well as
support for research as our personal
way of dealing with this disease of
the immune system.
The folks in Huron who have
H1V/A1DS and their support group
need our prayers, our good thoughts
and full support as we all gam

Grand Sister Elva Brown presiding.
It was reported that Sister Hope
Lowe had knee surgery and is
getting along fine.
A successful casserole card party
was held on Nov. 19 with thanks to
all who attended or helped out.
A donation was made to the
Huron County Children's Aid
Society for the Christmas Bureau.
The next meeting will be on
Tuesday. Dec. 9 with dinner al JR's
al 6:30 p.m. Following the meeting,
secret sisters will be revealed and
gifts under the tree exchanged. The
social committee will provide
entertainment.
Editor’s note: Sandra Clark of
Brussels is off on a second
pilgrimage to Israel as part of a
group of Christian women.
I am sending these messages from
an internet cafe in the Christian
Quarter of the old city. The Old City
designation means we are inside the
walls of ancient Jerusalem.
Our hotel is part of the old
building of the Latin Patriarchate
and it is built right against the walls.
We were in what I imagine was the
monastery and the other half of the
building is still ‘head office’ of the
Latin Patriarchate, which I
understand to be Roman
Catholic...or maybe Orthodox. There
is such a variety here that one is
easily confused.
We don’t venture outside the walls
much except to go to our favourite
bookstore near Yehuda Street. It is
shut off as a pedestrian mall and I’m
sure you’ve heard it in the news
from time to time.
The one beautiful sunny day we
went up, there were crowds around
and many soldiers so we only had
coffee at the top end and went back
around the other way.
Since then we have felt safe to
wander there a couple of times.
We have explored the shouks a
few times and been to the Jewish
quarter also. It is a whole different
world. Things are very slow for the
kiosks there and the shopkeepers are
knowfedge and hopefully wisdom
about HIV and AIDS.
Santa has been to town. By the
smiling faces, level of energy and
laughter everyone seemed to be
having a good time. Thanks to all the
crew who got dear Santa and a great
parade organized.
The ladies at the Catholic church
report a successful bazaar and wish
to thank you for the support.
Congratulations to the winning
ticket holders. Harry Grobbink has a
new painting of a landscape to enjoy
while Alan Dow is cooking up some
new-found pork. Andrea Taylor can
now cuddle up in her new quilt
while Bill Brown figures out what to
do with his new doll. Morgan
Dietner won a free massage.
Enjoy your new gifts.
Advent is now here - the season of
waiting has begun. To Christians.
Advent is a lime to ponder the affect
of the birth of a baby over 2,000
years ago. Buttons sold a few years
ago said it all - "Jesus, the reason for
the Season."

very aggressive. You don’t dare
glance in the direction of their shop
or they either try to drag you in or
follow you down the street shouting
at you to buy. It is quite intimidating.
One day we went a little farther
into one section and came across the
shops where they sell the meat. That
was an education and we haven’t
been back. Every part of the animal
was hanging there and the walkway
was flowing with blood. We have
scratched that street off our list of
places to go!
There are other streets that sell
mostly clothes, and some that sell
housewares and the souvenir
places...you can find anything if you
can work your way through the
maze.
1 guess I'd better explain that what
are called streets are wide enough for
two donkeys to pass. They have little
tractors as wide as the one that plows
our sidewalks that haul narrow
trailers to collect the garbage. Most
of the streets are elongated stairways
to they have put little ramps a certain
distance apart on the steps so
retailers can get their carts up
down. They have carts with
bicycle wheels and have a
dragging behind on which the 'pilot'
stands to cause some drag as he rolls
his loaded cart down through the
thoroughfares. It’s a very different
life than what we know.

So as you bustle and rush about in
your preparations for Christmas just
think about the commonplace and
the poor young couple who made
such a difference in the world that
we still celebrate and sing about
their baby boy. In this season of
Advent take the time to think about
how your words and actions affect
the world - for they do.
The Huron County Christmas
Bureau is in full swing - ready for
our donations that will
significant difference
make a
in the
Christmas in the home nearby.
Check the ads and you'll know
where your gifts can be received.
This is one time that you know your
gift gets exactly where you want it.
Be generous, this is the season to
count your blessings.
Don't forget to go to Huronlea on
Saturday. They're looking for you to
support their sale, have lunch or just
come for a visit.
Support the week of Hope in this
advent season.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
