It was a year ago the agency was diligently working through the accreditation process. They were successful in receiving a positive rating. This past year they also celebrated their 25th anniversary. Also they expanded their Homemaking and Personal Support Services to Perth County this past spring. And now, they are celebrating again with a new program. Town and Country Support Services is a not-for-profit organization offering a mixed basket of community support services, homemaking and personal support services and supportive housing services to residents in Huron County. New to them is the mobility van transportation service. Back in the spring, the Ontario Ministry of Health gave TCSS a one-time funding grant to purchase a wheelchair accessible van. Currently, TCSS offers a volunteer transportation service to clients within Huron County however they had to limit the eligibility to the more mobile people within the community. With the new van, TCSS can now offer a transportation service to the wheelchair-bound clients or those with limited mobility. Thus, the van program will be a beneficial supplement to the existing volunteer transportation program. The charges for the van service will be the same as the volunteer program. Furthermore, there will be an intake process for each new client including an assessment and information consent form each client needs to sign. All paperwork needs to be completed before the service can be offered. After the initial paperwork is completed, the client then books each ride as needed through the agency’s transportation scheduler Her name is Mane Johnston. There is only one van at this time and it needs to service the whole county therefore it’s suggested clients book the van as soon as they know appointment times and dates. Van drivers are Greg Hansen and Paul Corriveau, both young retirees from the assessment office in Goderich and Don Wall, who retired from the agricultural business and was looking for something different. If you would like more information regarding the van service, contact Monica Gingerich, transportation co-ordinator at 519- 482-9264.
