Brussels Livestock report
Fed steers, heifers, cows sell steady
Total receipts for the Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Nov.
14 were 3,214 head of cattie, 211
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday fed steers, heifers and
cows all sold on a steady market. On
Thursday the veal sold on a stronger
market with an active trade while the
lambs sold steady with last week.
On Friday both the calves and year
lings sold on a strong active trade.
There were 627 steers on offer
selling from $87 to $90 with sales to
$117. Kada Farms. Bluevale, con
signed one grey steer weighing
1.380 lbs. which sold to Norwich
Packers for $117. Their overall
offering of seventy-four steers aver
aged 1,447 lbs. selling for an aver
age price of $89.80. One limousin
steer consigned by Walter Riddell,
Granton, weighed, 1435 lbs. which
sold for $105. His overall offering of
ninetsteers averaged 1,553 lbs. sell
ing for an average price of $85.96.
Clarence Dekens, Clinton, con
signed one limousin steer weighing
1,290 lbs. which sold to Norwich
Packers for $97.50. Four steers con
signed by Matthew Edgar, Wroxeter,
averaged 1,299 lbs. selling for an
average price of $90.50 with his top
black steer weighing 1,250 lbs. sell
ing for $94.25. Robert Mitchell,
Listowel, consigned two limousin
steers averaging 1.420 lbs. which
sold for $105. His overall offering of
fifteen steers averaged 1,439 lbs.

seven steers averaged 1,509 lbs.

Tree bylaw moving ahead
After years of study and eight
drafts county councillors want to
pass their Huron County forest con
servation bylaw now and make any
further amendments later.
Bluewater councillor Bill Dowson
told Huron County council Nov. 6
that the county has spent a lot of
time and money on the bylaw that is
going to go to waste if the bylaw is
delayed by endless tinkering at the
request of loggers.
“They’re have had the luxury of
going through bushes for a lot of
years and doing pretty much what
they wanted to,” he said, and now
they don’t like the idea of stiffer
rules.
Dowson was reacting to a presen
steer weighing 1,495 lbs. selling to
Norwich Packers for $100.
There were 242 heifers on offer
selling from $87 to $90 with sales to
$98. Jim and Rob Shortreed, Walton,
consigned one limousin heifer
weighing 1,275 lbs. which sold for
$98. Their overall offering of eleven
heifers averaged 1,186 lbs. selling
for an average price of $84.60. One
limousin heifer consigned by Jim
Dixon, Lucan, weighed 1,320 lbs.

offer. Holstein sold $95 to $105 with
sales to $110. Plain Holstein, sold
$75 to $85. Mark Pfeffer, Clifford,
consigned two holstein veal steers
averaging 625 lbs. which sold to
Newmarket Meats for $110. His
overall offering of six holstein veal
steers averaged 633 lbs. selling for
an average price of $107.32.
One red veal steer consigned by
Bob Franklin, Meaford, weighed
690 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat
packers for $107 and four holstein
veal steers averaging 690 lbs. which
sold for an average price of $92.92.

On Monday, Nov. 10 a special
vaccinated calf and yearling sale
was held. The calves sold $2 to $3
higher with the yearlings selling on a
strong active trade.
Steers, under 400 lbs. sold $132 to
$149; 400 - 499 lbs., $130.50 to
$153; 500 - 599 lbs., $114 to
over the forest conservation officer
said “the county’s intent isn’t to go
out looking for fines, it’s to preserve
woodlots.”
“We’ll work through this,” said
warden Dave Urlin. “There will be
changes. We have to get something
to start with.”
Meanwhile the county has short
listed six people from a total of 15
applicants for the position of forest
conservation officer. Pletch asked
that North Huron councillor Murray
Scott be added to the interview com
mittee because of his woodlot man
agement experience. Scott will also
be the county’s representative at the
community forest managers annual
meeting. 3

First aid on the farm
Farm Credit Canada (FCC) and St. John Ambulance spoke
to the Grade 8 class at Hullett Central Public School on
Nov. 14. The class was among the 1,500 Canadian stu
dents who will learn life-saving skills through the First Aid on
the Farm program this year. St. John Ambulance volunteers
will go the schools and teach a one-day course on the bas;c
first aid skills including controlling severe bleeding, Heimlich
maneuver and giving artificial respiration. The materials
given out after the presentation were provided by the FCC.
