AMDSB to host parent forum on SEAC, Nov. 27
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
Marie Parsons, education
superintendent for the Avon
Maitland District School Board, says
anyone who spends even a small
amount of time involved with
special education in Ontario gets to
know a lot of acronyms.
In fact, even the
community/parent groups which
assist each school board in
administering Special Education are
referred to by an acronym: SEAC
(Special Education Advisory
Committee).
Other key acronyms that are
commonly used when discussing
special education in Ontario — often
to refer to parts of the process
through which particular students
are identified for various levels of
special education support — include
IPRC (Identification, Placement and
Review Committee), ISA (Intensive
Support Application), EA
(Educational Assistant) and IEP
(Individual Education Plan).
That’s part of the reason, Parsons
says, that the Avon Maitland SEAC
committee will host its first parent
forum on Thursday, Nov. 27 at
Stratford Northwestern Secondary
School, from 7-9 p m.
Under the theme. Removing the
Barriers to Special Education, the
event will feature guest speaker Dr.
Marilyn Marshall, a child
psychologist based in Stratford. Her
talk will be entitled What’s the
Matter With Them?
There will also be a presentation
from Avon Maitland staff. According
to Parsons, that presentation will
cover such topics as what happens
when parents attend the annual IPRC
assessments, and what happens
during report card sessions.
Pertinent literature, such as the
board’s IEP Parent Guide, will be
available for parents to pick up.
The rest of the evening will be
dedicated to a question and answer
session.
Parsons encourages attendance
from parents with students currently
receiving special education
programming from the board, as
well as those who believe they might
need such programming in the
future.
“We’re asking that parents register
by leaving their names at their home
schools,” the superintendent
explained.
As with each school board in the
province, each SEAC committee is
also renewed every three years.
To renew representation from
community groups on its SEAC
committee, the Huron-Perth
Catholic District School Board is
currently seeking applications from
so-called local associations, for
members to serve a three-year term.
The board requires letters of
application, as well as a reference
from “an association or organization
of parents that operates locally
within the area of the Huron-Perth
board, and is affiliated with an
association (not of professional
educators) that . . . operates
throughout Ontario, to further the
interests and well-being of one or
more groups of exceptional children
or adults.” Applicants must be
Catholic school supporters.
Beat the
temptation.
