Students from Kincardine District
School went to F.E. Madill on Nov.
10, to give a presentation to the
Grade 12 physics students about a
robotics competition.
The students from Kincardine
spoke about their experience at the

Science and Technology (FIRST)
Robies Competition.
Two years ago the Kincardine
students won the world
championship for the robot they
created, which had to perform a
specific task.

Flu season arrives early
The Huron County Health Unit is
urging residents to get their flu shot
as soon as possible. Last week,
health officials from Alberta and
Saskatchewan reported major
influenza A activity. In addition,
Toronto Public Health reported the
arrival of influenza A in Ontario
causing an outbreak in a long-term
care facility.
This is an indication that Ontario
may experience an early flu season.
There have been no confirmed cases
of influenza in Huron County to
date; however, it is important that
children, youth, and adults get the
flu shot as soon as possible to
provide as much protection as
possible from influenza illness.
“Our flu seasons in the past few
years have been mild”, explains Dr.
Beth Henning, Huron’s medical
officer of health. “Since flu virus
activity has been generally low,
people will have no or limited
got involved through his physics
classes and Mr. Shuck’s technology
class.
The FIRST robotics competition
involves different schools across
Canada. They create a team and
build a robot using supplied motors,
remote controls and some
electronic, but doing their own
machining and other fabricating.
There is a limit of six weeks in
which the robot must be compeleted,
but the task of the robot is not
revealed until the start of the six
week period.
The competition is in Toronto, but
there is a possibility the teams can
compete in larger North American
or even European competitions. A
protective immunity against the
virus and are at higher risk for
serious flu illness.”
Dr. Henning explains that young
children are particularly susceptible
to the flu because most have little or
no history of exposure to the flu
virus. Others at risk for
complications from the flu include
babies, the elderly, and those with
chronic health conditions like
