For the children’s story. Rev.
Eugen Bannerman read a story
called. Potato Chips. A little boy
packs his lunch of potato chips and
root beer and heads off to have
lunch with God. He comes across an
old woman who looked hungry and
he offered her some potato chips
and a drink. She smiled at him in
return.
He went home and told his family
he had had lunch with God. The old
woman went home to her son and
told him she had had lunch with
God.
The children presented the shoe
boxes for the Samaritans Purse.
The dramatized lectionary reading
was from Mark 13: I-8. Those
taking part were Amanda, Brandilyn
and Wyatt Bearss, Chelsea and
Amelia Carter-Brown.
Rev. Bannerman’s message to the
adults was. Potpourri of Spiritual
Miscellany. He gave IO suggestions
for a healthy spiritual life. Some of
these were: marry the right person,
be forgiving, be generous, treat
everyone as you want to be treated.

FROM BLYTH
Eight Vxvdetie^
By Lois van Vliet
The Blyth Horticulture Society
held its meeting in the form of a
potluck supper on Monday, Nov. 10.
Approximately 22 people sat down
to dinner.
Following a short meeting, Betty
Battye, president, introduced special
guests, Ken and Laura Scott of the
Blyth area.
-They showed coloured slides of
their trip to Thailand where they
visited their daughter who is an
English teacher there. Thailand is a
small country bordering on the
Andaman Sea and the Gulf of
Thailand in the northern Indian
Ocean.
They said, “When we first arrived,
we made sure we wore our maple
leaf t-shirts as we didn’t want them
thinking we were Americans.”
As it turned out, the SARS
outbreak was in Canada at that time
so the people they met kept their
distance.
Also, the people knew that
Canada did not join the coalition
forces in the war in Iraq.
April, they said, is their hottest
month in Thailand.
It is known as the Land of Smiles
as they are very friendly people.
They are either ultra-rich or ultra
poor.
Buddhism is their main relig
ion.
They have tiny houses behind
their homes where they put food and
flowers in them to scare away the
evil spirits.
They showed pictures of the River
Kwai which is located in
Kanchanaburi in the northern part of
Thailand. The movie, Bridge on the
River Kwai was based on this
location, the famous bridge having
been rebuilt.
There is a cemetery where many
of the men who lost their lives in the
blast that blew up the bridge are
buried.
Following the presentation special
music was provided by Heather
Elliott singing several songs,
accompanied by tape.
Chris Gleve called out the names during the Blyth United
Church silent auction held Friday night. (Vicky Bremner photo)
