At the Branch
Cadets spend weekend camping in London
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week has been busy as usual
around the Brussels Legion Branch.
The Cadets met on Tuesday
evening and made plans for their
upcoming camping trip on the
weekend. They left Friday evening
and travelled to south of London to
Peacekeeper Park. There were eight
Cadets and two officers attending
the training exercise weekend called
Landson.
Cadets from the entire Western
Ontario region including members
from Brussels and the new Clinton
Corps attended. They report having a
great weekend.
They returned late Sunday
afternoon.
Attending from Brussels were
officers, Captain Grobbo and Second
Lieutenant Patricia Wegg, and
Cadets Master Warrant Officer
Robins. Sergeant Larry Cyples,
Master Corporal Dan Forbes. Private
Katrenah Kehoe, Private Lance
Stafford. Private Jolene Vandekolk,
Private Joseph Kerkhof and Cadet
Monique Kehoe. ■' •
On Thursday evening there were
16 darters taking aim at the boards.
The first place team was Eric Ross
and Judy Buchanan. Coming in
second were Bruce Clark and Ken
Bird and placing third were John
Harrison and Norm Dobson.
Taking the skunk award were
Terry Buchan and Adam Smith.
The men’s high start was thrown
by Eric Ross, scoring 140. The
ladies' high start was by Lynda Shaw
achieving 78 points.
the disappointing shot of the
evening was by Bob Cochrane who
shot a high 177 but only needed 161.
so whoops, doesn’t count.
It’s great fun and anyone is
welcome to come out and join in
anytime.
There was no meal on Friday night
as it was Halloween and the Branch
closed early. This week is meatloaf
and baked beans.
Saturday was the first day of the
Craft and Bake Sale. Comrade Marg
Bennett and helpers Comrades
Grace Procter, Leona McDonald,
Jean Bridge, Elaine Nichol and
Marie Coutts were busy accepting
the bounteous donations of baking
and door prize items from the
generous Comrades of Branch 218.
The over 20 vendors saw a steady
flow of buyers and browsers until
mid-afternoon.
A lunch was made available to
vendors and visitors downstairs in
the decorated lounge by Comrades
Julie Harrison and Jo-Ann
McDonald. A variety of soup and
sandwiches were available.
On Sunday, the craft show
continued with many return
browsers now being buyers. The
door prizes continued to be given
away throughout the afternoon.
Travelling on Saturday to
Wingham Branch 140 to participate
in Zone cribbage were four teams
from Brussels.
There were 16 Comrades hoping
the cards were with them.
Unfortunately only one team of four
had the lucky cards to advance them
to Paisley in February, Comrades
John Harrison, Sandra Josling, Eric
Ross and Norm Dobson.
The other Comrades enjoying their
day included Lloyd Glanville and
Dave Taylor, Shirley Taylor and
Helen Brenie, Glenn Bridge and
Helen Dobson, James Alton and
Dianne Machan, Linda Bird and
Krista Mellin and Ken Bird and Bob
Fowler.
Congrats to all who participated
and the winners.
Anyone who has pop tabs
collected is asked to bring them into
the Branch.
Best wishes to Kaye Duncan for a
speedy recovery after suffering a
fall.
The early bird winner for the
month of October was Comrade
Shirley Taylor. She wins her 2005
dues. There is only one more early
bird draw to be made at the end of
November. There are still more than
half of the Comrades of Branch 218
left to pay their dues, for 2004, so we
are a long way from our early bird
goal of 80 per cent.
The poppy campaign has been
active since last Friday when
poppies became available for
donation at many local and area
stores and Legions. The poppy has
the new black centre and donations
received go to veteran’s comforts.
■ If you cannot afford a donation
please take a poppy and wear it in
Remembrance of the over 116,000
Canadian soldiers who died to keep
our country free and who helped to
give us the freedom we enjoy today.
This year marks the 50th
anniversary of the Korean War
Armistice and we remember the
Canadian sacrifice and
achievements. The Korean War
began June 25, 1950 when North
Korean forces crossed the 38th
parallel into the Republic of Korea.
Canada agreed with the United
Nations in condemning the attack
and joined 15 other nations to resist
the aggression. In November of
1940 China entered the war on the
side of North Korea and the Allied
Forces had to reposition themselves
south of the 39th parallel.
By mid-1951 the Allied Forces
had pushed the Chinese and North
Koreans north of the 38th Parallel
and cease-fire negotiations began.
It was not until July 17, 1953 after
two years of static warfare that the
Korea Armistice Agreement was
signed. There continues to be an
uneasy truce between North and
South Korea yet.
Canada was the third largest
contributor to the multi-national
force in Korea. In all, 26,791
Canadians served in Korea, suffering
1,558 casualties including 516
deaths.
Although we have no Korean
veterans at Branch 218, it is still our
