The Citizen, 2003-11-05, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2003. Separate board begins own OYAP program By Stew Slater Special to The Citizen After several years of being the smaller partner in a program administered by the “coterminous” Avon Maitland District School Board, Catholic students in Huron and Perth Counties now have their own version of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Tim Martens, a technical education teacher who had previously approached the Huron- Perth Catholic District School Board and suggested the board’s OYAP funding would be better spent if it separated its program from the Avon Maitland model, is now the Catholic board’s new OYAP co-ordinator. He provided Huron-Perth trustees with an update on the program at a regular meeting, Monday, Oct. 27. Martens noted that the vision of the provincial Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, which funds OYAP, is to expose Grades 11 and 12 students to the notion of seeking employment in the skilled trades. “We’ve taken it one step further and taken it to the elementary level,” he explained, pointing to a series of photos he brought to the meeting featuring a two-day workshop for Grades 5 and 6 students. “I thought, with a board of this size, (the elementary-level introduction to technical trades) is do-able.” Having now begun his first year co-ordinating the version of OYAP he created for the board, Martens Good admitted he may have underestimated his needs, both in terms of money and resources. But he credited support from the board, creative ways of stretching resources, and partnerships within the school and business communities for making it work. “It’s like a business,” he told trustees. “It’s got to be viable; it’s got to be sustainable. Fortunately, we don’t have to make a profit. But we do have to break even.” Martens stressed that, after several years of co-operation under Avon Maitland co-ordinator Glen MacGregor, the Huron-Perth program has definitely not cut ties with its coterminous counterpart. As an example, he pointed to the sharing of resources on promotion of the program through radio and newspaper advertisements, as well as in some area hockey rinks. On Oct. 16, both OYAP programs took part in an event called Tech Talks, at the Avon Maitland board’s delivered ih the best way possible,” Martens told trustees. At the secondary level, the goal of OYAP is to bring together the aspects of technical education, co operative education involving work placements, and partnerships with community and industry employers. St. Marys DCVI high school. Organized by Stratford-based Job Connects, it provided students with a chance to meet skilled tradespeople employed by area industries, and learn about potential job opportunities. “I’ve gone to great lengths to maintain a strong relationship with the Avon Maitland board, and coordinate on several levels to make sure we make the best use of the funds and ensure this program is HURON CHAPEL EVANGELICAL 'lt MISSIONARY CHURCH SING A SON§ OF Auburn -526-1131 PASTOR DAVE WOOD - 523-4941 Sunday Wednesday 9:30 a.m. - Family Bible Hour 10:30 a.m. - Morning Worship Service 7:30 p.m. - Evening Worship Service 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.- Youth 7:15 p.m. - Adult Bible Study BRUSSELS - ETHEL PASTORAL CHARGE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Joan Golden - Diaconal Student Minister Church Office 887-6259 E-mail - bepc@wcl.on.ca November 9 t St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church 254 Drummond St. E., Blyth Saturday Night Mass at 7:00 pm Father John Johnson, Pastor 357-2435 THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA NOVEMBER 9 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER r Trinity, Blyth 9:30 a.m. St. John's, Brussels 11:15 a.m. The Rev.
