Brussels got on the score sheet quickly, with Jory Uyl scoring 45 seconds into the game, assisted by Colleen Aitchison and Cassandra Uyl. The home team dominated the early part of the game, however St. Marys gradually found their legs and began to generate some scoring chances, finally getting one past the Brussels goal tender midway through the second period. Both teams continued to trade scoring chances, but neither connected and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Brussels girls travelled to Glencoe on Sunday for a rematch with a rugged squad that had bested them by one goal in their previous meeting. This game proved to be a similarly close-fought match. It remained scoreless until near the end of the second period when a Glencoe player picked the corner on a breakaway. Brussels also had their share of scoring opportunities. On one notable shift Bridget Blake had several close chances but was unable to get the puck across the goal line. In the end, Brussels ended up losing to a very strong Glencoe squad 1-0. “In the four games the girls have played so far this season, all have been very even contests, ending with a difference of one goal or less”, said coach Steve . Bowers. “They continue with what is shaping up to be a very busy November, travelling to Strathroy on Thursday and St. Marys on Sunday.” Kids get time for questions Crusaders have rough weekend The Brussels Crusaders lost their two games this past weekend in WOAA league action dropping their record to two wins and five losses. On Friday the team travelled to Durham to play the Thunder Cats. Things started off well as Tyler Armstrong turned a Durham turnover into a 1-0 lead scoring an unassisted goal. Durham tied it at one but Mike Haggitt would restore the lead for Brussels with help from Mark Wilson. Durham tied the score at two by the end of the first period, and being a perennial powerhouse turned on the gas scoring four goals in the second and 8 more in the third enroute to a 14-2 blowout. On Saturday night the team hosted the Ripley Wolves. Trailing 1-0 in the second Cory Bragg scored a powerplay goal with help from Haggitt to tie it up. Mike Bromley would give Brussels a 2-1 lead with help from Haggitt and Brett Fischer. Ripley tied it at two with 21 seconds left in the second and would retake the lead 32 seconds into the third. Ripley added an empty netter enroute to a 4-2 win. Brussels travels to Georgian Bay on Saturday night in a rematch with the River Rats. The team’s next home game will be Nov. 14 against Clinton in Blyth at 9 p.m. Continued from page 1 beverages will be in the parking lot after the workshops are completed. This will also give the children time to ask questions and meet team players. Hruska said she sees this as a “positive mentoring program.” “The teenagers (from Madill)tare taking their own time to come out and work with the younger kids. This speaks very highly of these kids that are helping.” Blyth Juveniles glide to victory over Drayton The Blyth Juveniles were all over Drayton Oct. 31 in a home game. The team set the tone early with three unanswered goals in the first period. Scoring were Neil Salverda, Scott Austin and Micah Loder. Assists went to Nick Courtney, Tyler Campbell and Ryan McLean. Salverda scored Blyth’s only goal of the second early on, with help from Derek Cook. Drayton, however, finally found some steam and answered with two less than a minute apart to come within two. Blyth continued to build on that lead with two third-period goals. Campbell got the first, while Salverda completed his hattrick. Assists went to Loder, Craig Marks, Shaun Cudmore and T.J. Marks. Drayton managed one in the third to finish the game at 6-3 for the hosts. Blyth served 38 penalty time, while Drayton had 30 minutes. Coach Robb Finch said, “The boys played well but need to skate harder and avoid those useless hooking penalties. Goalie Travis Shelton turned Drayton away numerous times to keep his team in the game.” The next home game is Friday, Nov. 7 at 9 p.m. Re Marg Anderson Councillor for the Municipality of Central Huron East Ward (former Township of Hullett & the Town of Clinton) dedicated with 6 years experience fair & willing to listen accountable team player I would appreciate your support.
