THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2003. PAGE 7.
Writer feels scary event
dangerous entertainment
Sandra McNichol, Cole Zwep, centre and Eric Vanderyk
enjoy a quiet place to sit outdoors at Walton Little School’s
new shelter. The parent advisory committee recently
completed the shelter with funds from last year’s silent
auction. Henk VandenBroek did the construction, while
SunNorth donated and installed curtains. The major
fundraiser this year is the Christmas in the Country dinner,
auction and dance, Nov. 21 in Brussels. Anyone wishing to
donate items can call 887-8302 to arrange pick-up. Funds
will go towards purchases for the three classrooms. (Photo

THE EDITOR,
It was with unbelief to see the
picture on the front page of The
Citizen Oct. 29 titled Out for Terror
to entertain hundreds of people at
the Greenway Trail. To me this is
outright dangerous, to be entertained
by skeletons, goblins, ghosts,
etc.
Also the cross the corpse was
wearing was used cheaply. It might
have entertained hundreds of people,
but the cross has been and will be
precious by millions of people.
That cross should have been worn
by the corpse in the coffin upside
down, as a symbol of satanism in
this case.
. Did it not occur to the editor, that
this sort of entertainment is very
frightening for young children?
I have nothing against children
coming to our door for trick or treat.
They are always polite and pleasant.
But to be out for terror as the
wording stated above the picture we
do not have to go very far. The
media informs us, more than enough
what goes on in the world of terror
and terrorism.
We should draw on what the Bible
says in Phillipians 4: 8-10 “Finally
brother, what is ever true, noble,
right and pure, lovely, admirable and
praiseworthy think about such
things.”
If we keep focused on these
words, the world would be a better
place for many people to live in.
Sincerely,
Mary Passchier. z
Empty stores BIG concern
Continued from page 3
declare Blyth’s main street a
business enterprise zone which
would allow tax incentives for
property owners who improve their
buildings.
The big concern, he said, is that
the longer some buildings remain
empty the more expensive it may be
to put them back in shape to host
businesses in the future.
The third approach is image
development. Sparling said, noting
this ties in with concerns expressed
by BBA members in a 2001 survey
when they gave a high priority to
things like Christmas lighting and
Communities in Bloom.
There may be need for an events
co-ordinator for the village to bring
more people to town through
promoting the assets and events the
village already has, Sparling said.
Sparling said BIG has come to
realize that while Blyth faces many
problems in a changing society, it
also has tremendous potential
because of the many things built by
people of the community over the
years.
“I believe we live in a truly
remarkable community,” he said.
Noting Blyth has a reputation as a
community that gets things done,
Sparling said “Community spirit is
the intangible thing that gets things
done.”
Blyth’s success is built on the
three pillars of its people, its
businesses and its facilities and
events, he said.
BIG will make use of willing
volunteers as the program
developed, he said, but the
committee does not want to waste
people’s time going to endless
meetings until something tangible
can be accomplished.
