Dress up at historical society annual dinner
The Huron County Historical
Society held its annual dinner
meeting on Oct. 24 at the Goderich
Twp. Hall, Holmesville.
Greeting guests as they arrived
were Judy Awfury, wearing a pale
blue empire-style dress (1805-
1825), Bill Dineen and Bob Day
wearing the general uniforms of the
British Army - the 1st Battalion -
1st Regiment of Foot - The Royal
Scots, reliving Canada’s heritage
(first to serve in Canada.)
The uniforms are made
completely of wool, the shirts of
cotton. Around the neck is a
neckstop to have the soldiers keep
proper posture (unable to look
sideways or down) - only straight
ahead at enemy). Wearing a hat
with a green hackle meant you
served in the light company on the
wing which was a more important
job.
Ms Awfury’s dress was worn
with a high-waisted “Spencer”
jacket with a tail at the back. At this
time four layers of clothes were
worn (pantaloons, chemise, full
petticoat and dress). Also worn was
a hat and blue silk slippers.
Dave Yates welcomed everyone
and thanked them for supporting
the Society. At this time everyone
was surprised with the arrival of
Tiger Dunlop (Rob Bundy). His
antics amused the crowd during the
evening.
A delicious meal was enjoyed.
John Graham introduced the
speaker, Robert C. (Bob) Lee who
spoke about his thesis about the
Canada Company, which casts a
new light on the role of
company in this period,
inception was in 1826
dissolution took place in 1953.
Mr. Lee is a descendent of one of
the original Huron Tract families,
the Lees of Goderich. Many
townships were named after the
families involved with the Canada
Company.

It was pumpkin carving time at Sacred Heart School in
