There was much to celebrate in
Wingham on Oct. 24 as local
graduates of F.E. Madill
Secondary School were among
those to receive awards at the
commencement ceremonies.
Krista Hewitt received the Grade
12 art award.
Ashley North was awarded the
OAC French and 4U/OAC
Geography awards.
Heather Black received the OAC
art award, the Henderson
Memorial Award for
demonstrating superior academic
abilities who is proceeding to
university and has worked at
bettering humanity either within
school or the community. She
received the 4U/OAC English
award which also went to Hannah
Hall
Cheryl Armstrong was awarded
the OAC history award.
The Stephanie Lea Henry
Memorial Award for a Grade 12
student who is a graduate of
Brussels Public School and has
contributed positively to the
academic, social and
extracurricular life at Madill went
to Jessica Spink.
Amanda Palmer received the
Grade 12 physical and health
education Award for a student that
has excelled in every aspect of the
Grade 12 programme in
academics, leadership, class
achievement and in school sports.
She also received the Doug
Bieman Award for a deserving
student entering first year at the
University of Guelph.
The Jeanne Oldfield Memorial
Arts Scholarship went to Nicole
White for having high academic
standing, being a graduate of
Brussels Public School or resident
of the town of Brussels who is
proceeding to further their

Halloween events for everyone
Brussels Public School has been a
very busy place. On Oct. 29 the
primary children have Halloween
activities to enjoy. This afternoon
has been planned by their student
council. There will be lots of fun
games to play. Students can donate a
small amount of money to help
cover the costs.
Another Halloween activity the
student council has organized is to
ask each class to make a Halloween
poem, and perform it in front of the
school on Thursday. The poems will
be judged by a judging panel. The
prize for the winning poem is a very
large pumpkin donated to the school
by Mr. John Perrie.
Oct. 31 is a spirit day. It will be
orange and black day, so show your
school spirit and dress in these
colours.
There is a Halloween dance for
Grades 6-8 on Friday as well.
Students are asked to bring a canned
food item for the admission fee.
The school is also getting
prepared for volleyball. Girls’ and
boys’ practices have started.
Performance band is also going
well. They are learning lots of new
songs.
Mrs. Hall was very busy on Oct.
21 as she had both classes which
totalled 31 students at one time.
With lots of help, Mrs. Hall took
them to see Peter and The Wolf.
Kindergarten are busy doing many
different Halloween activities,
which includes making chains with
education in art, English or music.
Crystal McLellan received the
Norman M. Hayes Memorial
Scholarship for proceeding to
further education at a post
secondary institution in health
sciences, having demonstrated
good citizenship and community
involvement.
The George Menzies
Endowment Fund Awards for
graduates of Brussels Public
School who have the highest
averages in 11 senior courses that
meet diploma and post secondary
admission requirements went to
Jenna Krotz, Nicole Mastnak,
Crystal McLellan, Lesley Pepper,
Curtis Schlosser, Jodi Sellers,
Brooklyn Wheeler and Nicole
White.
The CIBC Scholarship went to
Shawn Cottrill for proceeding to
post secondary studies in the
business field.
Becky Nethery and Krista
Hewitt won the Wingham
Optimists Award whose motto is
“Friend of Youth”, for proceeding
to post-secondary education and
working toward making the world
a better place.
Joel Hemingway received the
West Wawanosh Mutual Insurance
Award for furthering his education
in agriculture or related fields.
The Michelle Kay Catherine
Andrew Memorial Scholarship
went to Kristyn Gerth for being the
top track and field athlete who has
been accepted at a college or
university.
The Garniss Family Award for a
resident of the Belgrave area who
has exhibited good school
citizenship and has contributed
positively to the community
through involvement in
community activities to Scott
Folkard and Laura Meier.
Lesley Pepper and Curtis
Schlosser received the Brussels
Community Development Trust
colours of orange and black. They
are counting down until Halloween.
In the painting centre they are
painting pumpkins and ghosts. They
are also practising birthdays and
phone numbers.
In Mrs. Douma’s class they are
singing lots of Halloween songs and
doing Halloween art. They are
learning spooky new words. In
math, they cut out shapes and then
made pictures with them as they
practise geometry. They also had a
great time at Peter and The Wolf.
Mr. Stewart has his class busy
with reading coaches every
morning. They are also doing lots of
new things in math and language.
They are almost finished their
problem solving with adding and
subtracting. Mrs. Lee has her
students busy with new science
themes, as well as social studies.
They are enjoying themselves in the
gym.
Ms Ewener and her class had to
say goodbye to Ms Carter, as her six
weeks of student teaching at
Brussels Public had come to an end.
The students will always remember
her and all the great fun that they
had with her.
They have started many new
things in language, and are having
fun studying new things in history.
Math is keeping them busy as well.
Miss Laurie has all of her
musicians practising hard for an
upcoming music test.
In science, the Grade 5/6s have
Scholarship for a graduate of
Brussels Public School who
exhibited good citizenship while a
student at Madill and has
proceeded to further education in
the technical field, either an
apprentice or at college.
Jeffrey Drost was awarded the
Marklevitz Architects Scholarship
for Design and Development for
excelling in the design and
development aspects of a broad
based technological program,
contributed to the school and
community and is enrolled in post
secondary education in the
technological field.
Jacklin Falconer was awarded
the Darryl Manjin Musical Theatre
Memorial Award for a graduating
student who demonstrated
outstanding vocal and drama skills
and who has contributed positively
to music theatre productions
throughout their time at Madill.
The Mustangs on the Move
Award went to Garrett Knight and
Becky Snowden who have
contributed positively to life at
Madill and who have now moved
on to post secondary education or
the workplace.
The F.E. Madill Secondary
School Teaching Staff Awards
were given to Nikki Brown,
Kristen Palmer and Lee Siertsema
who have demonstrated high
scholastic standing and or good
school citizenship.
The Student Council Awards
went to Laura Meier and Kristen
Palmer for giving something of
themselves back to the student
body by their participation in the
three prongs of the Big M -
scholarship, athletics and
activities.
The Queen Elizabeth II Aiming
for the Top Scholarships went to
Heather Black, Shawn Cottrill,
Jacklin Falconer, Krista Hewitt,
Jenna Krotz, Becky Nethery and
Lee Siertsema. This is given by the
been doing projects, classifying
different kinds of creatures, as well
as studying the human body.
Cursive writing is challenging the
students. Their room is full of
different unique Halloween
decorations. They made mummies
out of apples for art.
The students in this class are
getting the opportunity to go and
volunteer at Toy Bus. They come
back and say how much fun they
had. In math, they are starting data
management.
Mrs. Baan has ended a unit on
biographies and is starting a unit on
myths. They are busy with data
management in math. In art the
Grade 6/7s are doing textures. They
will be taking a walk around town to
look at some buildings, so if you
happen to see them, give them a
wave. In science they are doing
experiments with different variables.
Mr. Weber has the language
magazines projects on the go. In
science, the Grade 7/8s, are
graphing data and they did a
popcorn experiment. Volleyball
skills are being practised in gym
class. Different strategies are
worked on each week in math. The
class gained practical experience
when they did their Thanksgiving
projects.
The Spaghetti fundraising supper
is on Thursday at the BM&G arena
from 5 - 7 p.m.
