Huron East candidates state views on municipal issues
ROBIN DUNBAR
Running for
mayor of Huron
East is Robin
Dunbar.
The former
Grey Twp.
politician served
for 12 years on
that council,
several of them as
reeve. He has
been involved at
the county level of politics and
served for five years as an assistant
to an MPP.
The reason he chose to run in this
election was “to ensure that all parts
of Huron East are treated fairly.”
Dunbar feels it is important that
all residents in all areas see the
benefits of amalgamation.
His personal goal is to guarantee
that the “hidden” parts of Huron
East, such as its hamlets and rural
areas are not neglected.
DEBBIE VAN BEEK
Debbie Van
Beek is seeking
the position of
councillor for
Grey ward in
Huron East.
For the past
nine years she has
been employed by
W e s c a s t
Machining, Wingham. For eight of
these years, she represented the
employees on the union committee,
three as chairperson. Van Beek has
been on the negotiating committee
for three collective agreements.
Van Beek said council has to
ensure that all services that are
provided with tax dollars are intact,
and that they grow and develop with
the municipality, while still trying to
keep taxes at a minimum.
“My goal as councillor is to be the
voice of the people of Grey, to
ensure that the concerns and issues
of our rural community are heard
and to keep Grey a great place to
live, work and play for their families
and mine.”
PAUL DYCK
Paul Dyck is a
candidate for
Avon Maitland
District School
Board trustee to
represent
Central and East
Huron.
X retired
e m e n t a r y
school teacher and principal, Dyck
has resided in Hullett since 1975.
Dyck received his Bachelor of
Environmental Studies Degree from
the University of Waterloo and his
Master of Education from the
University of Western Ontario.
He has taught at Seaforth,
Robertson Memorial, Holmesville,
Huron Centennial and Brussels
Public Schools. He retired as
principal from the latter in 2002.
Dyck would bring front-line
knowledge and experience with
educational issues to the table as
trustee. Dyck has “total
commitment to a strong public
education system”
“As a school trustee with the
Avon Maitland District School
Board, I will provide leadership
and help make decisions to support
and improve the overall quality of
local public education. By
representing the students and
families in Huron East and Central
Huron I will advocate for viable
and safe schools in our towns and
rural settings and work to achieve
fiscal responsibility and
accountability for the taxpayers of
Huron and Perth Counties.”
JOE SEILI
Current Huron
East councillor
for the ward of
Brussels, Joe
Seili is seeking
the position of
mayor.
With two terms
under his belt as
councillor for the
village of Brussels following, by
one for Huron East, Seili also has
gained political experience as
president of the local Optimist
Club.
Seili said he chose to run for
mayor to continue the work of the
new municipality’s first council
with fair representation and
common sense.
Policing, day care and service
upgrades are important issues.
His personal goal is “to make
Huron East work together as one
municipality and keep all five
wards happy.
ALVIN MCLELLAN
Incumbent
councillor Alvin
McLellan is
seeking re
election to office
as a representative
of the people of
Grey in Huron
East.
Prior to his term
MAUREEN AGAR
Maureen Agar
is one of two
candidates for
the position of
deputy-mayor of
Huron East.
A resident of
Seaforth, Agar
was a member of
the Seaforth and District Minor
Hockey Association for over seven
years, two of those as president.
She was chair of St. James
School and Seaforth District High
School and worked on
Homecoming ’95 for SDHS. She
has been on the ball committee in
Winthrop and coached or managed
many sport teams.
She chose to run because “the
timing is right for me.”
Agar said she feels the
communities need to stay focused
on amalgamation and making it
work for Huron East.
“I would like to get the word out
about what a jewel Huron East is.
The tax base is the biggest tool a
municipality has to raise funds.”
Agar said she would bring to the
task “honesty, fairness and a great
sense of community.”
on the new council, McLellan
served two terms with Grey Twp.
council and one term as deputy
reeve. He has been 15 years on the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Recreation Board, 11 of those as
chair.
McLellan wants to ensure the
rural ratepayers are being treated
fairly.
Nutrient management is the most
important issue facing municipal
council, particularly how the new
regulations will affect farmers and
their neighbours.
Also, in Huron East, is the
question of whether or not to fund
day care.
His personal goal is “to see more
roads in the Grey ward hard-
surfaced, while keeping tax
increases to a minimum.”
SHELLEY KAASTRA
Shelley Kaastra is running for the
position of Avon Maitland District
School Board trustee representing
the Central East Huron area.
Kaastra has been actively
involved in local school issues
having served as chair of the student
advisory council in 2000 and 2001.
She made a public presentation to
Dr. Rozanski in September of 2002
and a private presentation to Dr.
James Down in June, 2003
regarding educational issues as they
affect Huron.
She chose to run for trustee as she
would like to represent the students
and parents at the board level. The
most important issue is “the unfair
funding formula in terms of the
transportation envelope.”
Her personal goal is to preserve
and improve quality education in
rural Ontario.
MS lives here.
BERNIE MACLELLAN
Incumbent
Bernie MacLellan
is seeking re
election as deputy
mayor of Huron
East.
Prior to his
recent term as
deputy-mayor,
MacLellan was
councillor for Tuckermsith Twp. for
seven years. For the past three years
he has represented Huron East at
county council and been chair of
the agriculture, public works and
seniors committee.
MacLellan has also served on the
Mid-Huron landfill site board, the
Hensall and Clinton fire board and
the Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority.
The hardest issue facing Huron
East, MacLellan feels, may well be
the day care issue in Tuckersmith.
“I feel day care is a service we
should provide. It is a service that a
portion of the community has come
to depend on. The unfortunate part
is that we are not only subsidizing
ourselves but also families from
other municipalities. We need to
find a way to make the day care
operate on or close to break even.”
His personal goal is to assist the
council in viewing Huron East as a
single municipality rather than five
individual wards that share one
office.
MARK BE AVEN
Mark Beaven is
running for
councillor of
Huron East, Grey
ward.
Beaven has
been active in
both federal and
provincial
politics. He
currently sits on
the provincial
agriculture task
force on nutrient
management.
He chose to run to give residents
of the Grey ward “the strong voice at
the council table that it deserves.”
Beaven said residents have told
him they are concerned about the
increase in taxes and reduction in
service. “They have asked me to put
a stop to it,” he said of one of the
biggest issues facing the
municipality.
His personal goal is “to be elected
to Huron East and represent the will
of the ratepayers of Grey.”
