The devotional time led by Bev Riley, Lynda Horbanuik and Florence Snell had a Thanksgiving theme. Scripture reading Phillipians 4: 6-7 pointed out that prayer brings peace. One family’s constant diet for a time of roast beef and potatoes gave new understanding to the discontent of the Israelites with daily manna while in the desert. Recognizing everyone takes daily shovel to kindly move a turtle to safety, they get angry. They don’t realize he is helping them. Mr. Vair pointed out to the children that there are people like that in the world also. No matter how kind and loving others are to them they are still angry, miserable and unappreciative. He encouraged the children to be like God, loving and kind in spite of how these people react. For a special Sunday came a special treat. Two very colourful ball hangings were on display on the gallery railing. They were presented to Camp Menesetung by the staff and campers of 2003. Chair of the camp boards, Barb Knox of Londesborough United Church explained the significance of the hangings. The handprint of every staff member and camper at the camp in 2003 is found'on these hangings and represents the blessings for granted the story gave the ladies a new way to appreciate this season of Thanksgiving. Scripture Luke 6: 38 was followed by a story about the coincidences that happened to a father and daughter around bicycles. The story was a lesson in charity and the love of God. The worship concluded with the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful. The scripture reading Matthew 5: 1-16 was part of Christ’s sermon on the Mount. The text for Mr. Vair’s message, Peace, can be found in the words of verse 16, Let your light so shine before men. Don Vair remarked on the many displays of and prayers for peace that followed the terrorist attacks of 9/11 or Sept. 11, 2001. Then, as now, war is a constant in the world. There is no real peace in the world. Peace is maintained by force, eg. policemen, peacekeeping troops, etc. Don asserted that peace everywhere depends on individual hearts. There is no real peace in any human heart that does not know the Prince of Peace, God, he stated. There are boundless examples of people who seem to have it all but are not happy and quiet of heart. Peace is a free gift of God if only one believes.
