Scouts ’ Apple Day
first fundraiser
Registration for 1st Blyth Scouting
was held Sept. 10. Beaver, Cubs and
Scout sections are running this year.
Initial registration numbers are 37
youth and 14 adults. Scouting in
Blyth is sponsored and financially
supported by the Blyth Legion,
Branch 420 and the Blyth Lions
Club.
Because none of the registration
fee stays at the local level
fundraising is necessary to help
cover local costs. The first fundraiser
of the season was Apple Day on Oct.
25. Due to the inclement weather
there was a lower turnout than usual.
But thanks to the generosity of the
community those who did canvass
door-to-door collected $493.
Colony leaders for 2003-2004 are
Fred Hakkers, Kerry Nesbitt, Erlene
Caldwell and Bevan Diebold.
Beavers meet Tuesday night 6:30 -
7:30 p.m. at the Blyth Public School.
October has a fall theme for
meetings, which included a visit to
Blythe Brooke Orchards Oct. 11 and
a leaf craft.
Pack leaders are Alan Young,
Nancy Hakkers and Rob Kolkman.
Cubs meet Tuesday night 7:30 - 9
p.m. at the Blyth Public School. This
year they will be working on the
requirements for the Black and
Tawny Stars.
Troop leaders are Lavern Clark,
David Cartwright, Gerald Hakkers,
and Kim Losch. Scouts meet
Wednesday night, 7 - 9 p.m. at the
Blyth Public School. They got
underway with a weekend camp
Sept. 26-28 at Dianne Radford and
Doug Scrimgeour’s pond to get up to
speed on camping skills. One month
later they attended an International
Camporee near Wallaceburg Oct. 17-
19.
Group committee meetings are
held the first Monday of the month at
the Blyth Public School starting at
7:30 p.m. The purpose of the Group
committee is administration,
fundraising, problem solving, PR
and liaison with the community and
the Scouting organization.
Several of the current 1st Blyth
leaders have been involved in
Scouting for 10 - 15 years, some of
whom no longer have a child
involved at the local level. There is a
need for ‘new faces’ and new ideas,
both at the program and the
administration level. For more
information contact Barb Knox, 523-
4290.
There have been many structural
changes in the Scouting organization
in the last few years. District have
been combined to form areas. Areas
have been combined to form new
regions. In 2002 Huron District was
dissolved. In 2003 Atironta region
was split up. Blyth is now part of
Frontier area, which includes
Stratford and Perth County, and as
such is part of Tri-Shores, which
includes London and extends to
Sarnia and Windsor.
Team Wawanosh wound up the 4-
H club A Sporting Chance with a
visit to the North Huron Community
Complex fitness centre for the
achievement program. They were
given a tour of the facilities by
Adam Ryan, a personal trainer.
He gave them a map of the centre
and told how the various machines
were laid out in the order that you
might do a workout. The intensity of
the workout increased with the
increase of the number on the
machine.
First warm up on one of the
treadmills, stationary bikes or cross
trainer machines. Next proceed
through machines of your choice,
following the numbers on the map.
The machines are labelled with
instructions on how to use them and
which muscles they target.
There are also exercises to do
using the free weights.
After the tour members were
allowed some free time on the
machines.
