Melville congregants’ usual pattern was totally changed last Sunday as they celebrated the 149th anniversary of Presbyterianism in Brussels. The morning service was cancelled for the special observance. Instead they met in the late afternoon with friends and neighbours in the church parlour to enjoy a delicious barbeque prepared by Cardiff Catering and volunteers from the congregation. This was climaxed by the evening service of worship. With a full choir and Mary Douma as organist, Rev. Cathrine Campbell welcomed guest minister. Rev. Peter Bush from Mitchell. Rev. Bush is a graduate of Knox College, an author, an organizer, and a passionate advocate of lay ministry. Members of the congregation then turned to welcome those around them, and during this time they enjoyed two anthems, Precious Lord, and Beyond People for Peace look ahead Members of People for Peace gathered at the McQuail farm, near Lucknow on Sunday, Oct. 19 to consider plans for the fall. People for Peace will join the Lucknow Quaker Worship Group in hosting a talk by American Quaker and Peace Activist, Chuck Fager on Sunday evening, Nov. 2. His topic is Project for a New Century of Peacework. He will discuss a strategic framework for peace work growing out of his 30 years of peace activism, historical research, and journalism, beginning as a staff member with Martin Luther King in the 1960s. Fager’s speaking engagements in Canada focus on the role Canadians the Sunset, by guest singers John and Chris McIntosh. Rev. Campbell led the congregation in the responsive reading of Psalm 98, then Rev. Bush read scripture readings of Exodus 3:1 - 12; and Revelations 3:7 - 13. In expressing his pleasure at being present for the occasion Rev. Bush first complimented the architecture of the church, pointing out several interesting aspects that make it uniquely Presbyterian such as the curved seats, the sloping floors and the geometric window decoration. “Before each of us there is an open door of opportunity for service’, stated Rev. Bush, as he began his sermon “and when we are called there are no excuses.” Referring to how Moses was called by God through the burning bush and how even when he felt inadequate, he had to accept the challenge laid upon him, Rev. Bush talked of the rewards of accepting can play in supporting the nonviolent resistance movement against the unilateralist American drive for world domination. He will outline practical local work that can be done to improve the long-term prospects for a better, more peaceful future. Fager wants to talk with Canadians about how they can help, and what they can offer Americans who are seeking ways out of the madness that has engulfed the US, and threatens the world. The talk will be held at the MacKay Centre for Seniors in Goderich and all are welcome. Work is also underway organizing an event on International Human Rights Day, Wednesday, Dec. 10.
