County
reaches
indigent
.funeral
agreement
By Keith Roulston
Citizen publisher
Huron County's social services
department has reached an
agreement with the Georgian Bay
District Funeral Service Association
for increases in the price of funerals
'for those on Ontario Works or
disability programs whose estates
cannot pay for their own funerals.
John MacKinnon. social services
administrator said there are typically
five or six funerals a year for the
county to pay for. After funeral
homes having received no increase
in their fees for 10 years, the new
cost will be $2,760 per funeral, not
including cemetery costs. The
agreement will see annual increases
to cover the cost of inflation.
That clause caused considerable
debate with Bluewater councillor
Paul Klopp noting that inflation had
been low recently but in the past the
cost of living sometimes increased
rapidly.
But North Huron councillor Doug
Layton noted that the costs for the
funeral homes increase every year
and they haven't been_ able to
recover those costs under the old
agreement. This agreement is
similar to those in other counties, he
said.
Bernie MacLellan, Huron East
councillor felt that if there had been
no increase for 10 years the issue
needed to be dealt with.
