Bantam Bulldogs beat Brussels Smack it It was Blyth versus Blyth on Dec. 4 as PeeWee broomball players faced each other in a very fun and eventful game. (Vicky Bremner photo) Blyth Novices win On Monday night, the Blyth Bantams hosted Brussels at the Blyth arena. Blyth opened the scoring on a goal by Curtis Robertson with assists from Roman Sturzenegger and Kenny Plunkett. Blyth scored again to go up by two with John McDowell beating the Brussels goalie. The assist went to Derek Youngblut. Brussels however beat the Blyth goalie Derek Mitchell to come On Saturday, Dec. 4 the Mildmay Redwings came to Blyth to play broomball against the Dynamites. The local PceWee team was fortunate to be wearing brand new green jerseys. Mildmay had a very strong defense line, keeping the ball in The Blyth Atom Reps celebrated a big victory over Durham at home recently. Goals in this 8-1 outing were scored by Carly Whitfield, with within one at the end of the first. Brussels tied the game early in the second but Youngblut gave the Bulldogs the leap again on a solid rush. Sturzenegger assisted on the goal. The Dogs added two more in the second from Sturzenegger • and Youngblut. Blyth had a 5-2 lead going into the third. The squad played the period mostly shorthanded as the refs gave them five minor penalties. Blyth was received a pass from forward, Jessica Kuik. He had a breakaway, but Mildmay was hot on his trail. He took a hard shot and scored a goal for Blyth. Blyth's goalkeeper Courtney Bos was really sharp and played an outstanding game. Mildmay kept four, Drew Wood, Cody Richmond with two and Shelsie Popp. Assisting were Kevin Pennington, Caroline McDowell, Connor Prescott and Nathan Plunkett. able to net two more goals however. Scoring were Thomas Lecomte and McDowell. Brussels added two of their own before the final buzzer but the Dogs came out on top 7-4. Mitchell played well in the Blyth net. Coach Matt Anderson said, "The team played very well but our penalty killing needs to improve as Brussels scored a couple of powerplay goals." Mildmay scored this goal in the last four minutes of the game, ending the action in a 1-1 tie. Coaches Harry Otten, Chas Bos and Mary Ann Drost say they have seen a definite improvement in all players compared to the last time they played this team in Mild- It's been a strong season for the Rep team this year with six wins under the belt. The squad next plays in the Silver Stick tournament this week. Broomball team ties Mildmay pounding balls in her direction and Blyth's end for a large part of the may. Blyth Atom Reps down Durham The Blyth Novices trounced Brussels away on Dec. 4. The visitors came out ready to play scoring five in the first period. Bulging the twine were Spencer Stevenson, Dalton Richmond, Alex Peters with two and Braydon Whitfield. Assists went to Whitfield, Wyatt Carey, Josh VanSoest, Richmond and Trystan Weber. The squad continued to hold Brussels down through the second, while adding three more to their own tally. Stevenson began things again, with Dylan Bromley and Richmond following suit. Getting the assists were Matt VanWyk, Peters and Stevenson. Peters added to the Blyth score with a late third-period goal, assisted by Richmond. Brussels finally got on the board, only to have it cancelled by Peters, who finished the Blyth scoring off a pass from Van Soest and Whitfield. Brussels Tykes take on BCH On Saturday, Dec. 4, the Brussels Tykes took on BCH on minor hockey day in Brussels. In a game that quickly became a battle of goaltenders, Colton Hastings stood tall in the Brussels goal as he made many fine saves. The BCH goalie also stopped numerous Brussels shots to keep the game scoreless for the first two periods. Early in the third, BCH came in on a breakaway only to be turned aside by Hastings. Ben Hruska skated into the BCH zone and with the help of Nathan Armstrong fed the puck out to Mitch Kellington who was in the slot to give Brussels the lead with less than 25 seconds left in the game. The final score was 1-0 for Brussels. With the win Brussels improves their season record to 3-2-1. This coming Saturday the Tykes travel to Zurich to play at 3 p.m.
